What's The Purpose Of Fishing?

I get you can use the fish to get fish for cooking... But since that's the case, why are there different species of fish? It all is used the same way right? No recipe I know of calls for a specific fish, just fish.

To get perfect roe to use or sell

    To get water themed furnishings

To get the Pandonean motif in Summerset

For an achievement to catch all the different fish in each zone to give us another thing to do and keep us busy

There are Green and Blue and a Purple or two Trophy Fish for the Master Angler Achievment.

And fishing can drop other loot too. I think even a motif is or will offered up, but you can get furnisings and other stuff too.

Also Perfect Roe which is used in quite a few recipes found from Fish.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    The purpose of fishing??

    Get fish for cooking
    Get perfect roe for crafting
get housing items (fish, pictures, other misc items)
    motifs

Essentially, it's basically just a time waster, kinda like fishing in real life...

    Two different questions, really...

What's the purpose of fishing?: Mostly for cooking, including ambrosia, made with perfect roe, which has a teeny tiny chance of dropping when you fillet fish. Also you can get achievements and sometimes gunny sacks(with crafting supplies).

Why are their different species of fish?: Immersion, I guess? I mean, there are different species of fish in elder scrolls lore....

Fishing achievement with the unique green and blue fish in each zone and water type.

Having different fish in different types of water adds a bit of diversity to fishing even if it doesn't affect game play. Kind of like not calling all the NPCs in the game Steve (extreme example I know).

Cleaning fish can give you a Perfect Roe and I think right now those sell for around 10,000 gold.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

Doesn't this require Summerset? I can't recall since I'm still upset this adds even more trash to the pile of trying to catch fish.

    Yes, it requires summerset..

I also often get mad when I get a 60k+ valued motif instead of a 80g fish.... Cluttering up my bags with that nonsense. /sarcasm

The bottles replace gunny sacks, btw. You don't get both.

The Pynadonean bottles are so much better than the wet gunny sacks they replace in Summerset. Much better loot and a good source of the new alchemy reagents.

If I want to fish for fish, I fish the starter islands, since there's only the one blue rare fish that drops there.

    Fish eggs.

When you "use" the fish in your inventory, you filet them. There's a very low chance this results in acquiring Perfect Roe.

You won't miss it. You get a chime and a yellow light when it's rewarded.

Perfect Roe is very rare, and very valuable.

It's needed for Legendary (gold) recipes, such as Psijic Ambrosia.

I fish because I want that Master Angler title. Got it on one character, am going back to get it on my PVP stam warden because I think its hilarious to fight people on a PVP toon wearing the Master Angler title.

Also, its a good way to catch up on those books I've been wanting to read.

also, the last I checked the drop rate of perfect roe from filleting fish is around 1%, maybe a hair under...just so you know that it really is pretty rare...BTW, what other recipes besides Psijic Ambrosia use perfect roe? I wasn't aware there were others...

NM...I see on the uesp.net the other recipes that use it...

Regular fish, you either filet for your own use and chance of roe, or you can sell intact. Rare (green and above) fish you can only vendor.

Fishing is a type of immersion. Aside from fileting fish for perfect roe & cooking (along with selling fine quality or higher fish to NPC's) and a rare chance for pynadonean motif pages, fishing goes as far as your imagination takes you.
If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

If a game does not respect your time, best thing to do is move on from it and find something else.

Fishing...enjoying the scenery, relaxing, repetitious (which is great for de-stressing) and sometimes, you catch something nice.

Love fishing. Love the calm. The repetition. Helps me sleep.

If you must ask yourself " what is the purpose of fishing?" then you have not yet found the true meaning of fishing. One does not simply fish to catch fish, but fishes for a higher purpose. That purpose cannot be explained, it must be discovered, for fishing has a different purpose for each individual. Go now, tadpole, and discover the oneness that is fishing and may the odds forever be in your favor.

I of course find it incredibly boring so I haven't even bothered, I find questing around 1 shotting everything to be relaxing enough.
