Looking for pve NB tank builds

***update*** completed VCoS and VSCP. Need to get Ebon first before I test VMaz but I’m making due with plague doctor.
Still haven’t switched my fortified brass yet. My group’s dps is too op so it’s not a big deal. Definitely need one with a damage shield though. Might try hatchlings shell.

Hey everyone! I’m looking for opinions on a pve stamblade tank. Before everyone gets triggered just know I have already built one that has tanked almost all vet dungeons. I haven’t done all yet but it gets through most.
Right now, I’m running 5 brass sturdy and infused, 5 livewire (jewelry block and potion enchants + snb infused with crusher) , 2 bloodspawn/ warden/ engine guardian (depending on the dungeon) and 2 random snb on back bar.

Do not think the NB tank is what it used to be but sure some still tank on it. The above might provide you with some information.

I checked it out before hand. It’s more geared towards the “sap Tank” or a mag blade build but thanks for the thought!

Usually tanks run ebon armour (buff to hp for entire grp), torugs pact (buffs the crusher enchant for more pen) or the alkosh set (more pen). I suggest you try some of those sets. Being a tank is less about staying alive (which is easy) than it is about optimising your grp's dps.

I’ll try Ebon out but it’s a pain to farm the jewelry/snb.

I still do not trust ebon on weapons and shield. It used to drop with weapon swap for a moment. They corrected that bug old issues have a way of cropping up.

Farm with friends and guildies to help get the rings faster.

I would do the armour but I need the physical resistance atm due to being only 400cp. That’s why I’m trying to get the jewelry and snb. I think I have almost everything minus one ring and the weapons. I also heard beekeeper/Ebon or plague was a good set to use for a max health tank. Btw I also just checked out the link. It looks like it’s been updated for Summerset. I might check it out when it’s released on console.

I’ve done most dlc besides wgt RoM and the dragon bones as i wanted to farm Ebon first just to keep the deeps alive a little longer.

I've always built mine to have both Stamina and Magicka reserves of each over 20k. My Nightblade tank uses Bloodthorns Touch and, as you already know, NB Tanks can have almost infinite sustain with Leeching and other goodies.

A spider was crawling on my arm as I typed that

You could always run Shacklebreaker though.

If you want to try a magblade tank, the "sap tank" is a good way to go. Livewire + lightning staff means everything around you is constantly off balance, and Bahrah's helps with AoE damage avoidance while also healing you. This build also has the advantage of being a decent DPS build (just swap to light armor).

    Update***

I finally got a full set of plague doctor until I can farm an Ebon shield. Current build.
I ran vet CoS, vICP, and it did well once I learned the mechanics. Still haven’t had a chance to test vWGT, vFalk, vMaz, vFL, vSCP yet. Waiting for Ebon set first but does well for all other vet dungeons especially for those who are cp<750. VCoS run was with 5 fb, 5 livewire. Also ran asylum but due to lag I did worse than I should’ve.

Stam argonian nb. (This was made pre-Summerset)
    60 stam
    4 health

    22k stam
    42k health
    18k Magicka
    28k spell and physical resistance
    1.4k stam recovery
    1 k health recovery
    600 Magicka recovery
    1.5k weapon damage
    1.2k spell damage

5 fortified brass infused+sturdy (lack of cp means I need to make up for resistances)
5 plague doctor, 3 jewelry (potion cooldown + 2 block reduction glyphs) + snb x2 (crusher enchants + sturdy shield)
2 engine guardian for sustain, warden for group buff (vet dlc dungeons/ normal trials)

I run offence and defence bar

    Offence bar:
Puncture, leeching strikes, refreshing path (might switch for twisting path or the new cloak heal) shadow image, silver leash/heroic slash/ stalwart guard(if dps is low cp) war-horn
    Defence bar:
Immovable brute, absorb Magicka, Vigor, double take, stalwart guard/ sap essence/ funnel health
    Shadow/siphoning/snb ult depending on dungeon

    Tri-stat foods, pots.

    My conclusion:
a fun build for those who are looking to try something other than the dk but difficult to learn if you go stam and, like myself, have no one to teach you. The shadow ult is an amazing panic skill to use if you ever run out of rss and need to gain it back. Reduces your incoming damage by 60% which means bosses barely scratch you and gives the healer a chance thto breath a bit. Throw it down, quickly Vigor, and spam light and heavy attack to get back stam. Ult gen is crazy especially if paired with heroic slash and bloodspawn. 20 ult for potion consumption, 2 ult for siphoning activation, ult p/s from heroic slash and b/s ult gen means if others have warhorn slotted you can slot soul Harvest and put it out left right and centre or give more group defence with shadow ult. Ether way, very challenging and dynamic. If you want to get into a serious endgame guild, don’t run this build as most people want BiS dk tank. (I’m slowly trying to see if i can run just as well as dk tank though)

Check back later on to see how it’s progressed!

I agree, being a tank is about helping out the group...and so I suggest that you DONT run Ebon, its not a useful set for the group...it provides a whopping 5% more health. People are bad at doing math...but 5% isn't going to make a difference in that regard 99.9% of the time, if people are losing 95% of their health, they are going to die anyway(here is where people will jump in and swear up and down they have been saved by Ebon...and its true...I have also killed 10 people in Cyrodiil while under 5% health...in all the HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS OF HOURS I have spent in PvP). You are far better off running Powerful Assault and increasing the group DPS, or Alkosh, or Imperium(which will give much better burst survivability than Ebon, especially because imperium will proc even when the last boss of Blackheart Haven turns you into a skeleton, or when you are otherwise locked down(minotaurs in vBF, Dranos in vCoS, vFGII Gamyne Bandu, pinned by the Senche in the menagerie in vFL, beamed by Zaan in vSP etc etc). Another set to consider that I like is Vestments of Orolime:

(2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery

(3 items) Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 5%

(4 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery

(5 items) Casting ground effect abilities in combat will create a circle of might on the ground for 10 seconds. You and your allies in the circle gain Major Courage for 30 seconds, increasing your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258 for 30 seconds. This effect can occur every 10 seconds.

Magicka recovery may or may not be useful to you...DK tanks could use it for igneous shield, not sure what magicka abilities a nightblade tank has that could provide group utility, but its the 5 piece that we care about here. My choice of ground effect to proc it is the Fighter's Guild ability: Circle of Protection(or more specifically ring of preservation morph)

Brand the earth at your location with a rune of protection for 20 seconds. You and your allies in the area gain Minor Protection and Minor Endurance, reducing your damage taken by 8% and increasing your Stamina Recovery by 10%
The rune also reduces the cost of Roll Dodge.

This is great for melee DPS who can stand close enough to you to take advantage of both circles...good DPS can play melee regardless of whether they are ranged(except for bow builds) and can take advantage. If you are up to the challenge of building a medium armor tank, the ideal would be:

    5 piece Vestments of Orolime
5 piece Powerful Assault(Or Alkosh if you prefer)
2 Piece Lord Warden(Thorvukun is another option)

This type of tank would provide the greatest group utility buffing the weapon damage of everyone who can stand close to you by 387 and the spell damage by 258...as an added bonus, you might be able to pull off 10k DPS yourself from the buffs, further increasing group DPS. That isn't to say that you would be able to tank anything in the game...hitting armor cap in medium armor can be tricky with sets that don't help in that regard, and with a stam pool of 25k at least your max health will also be below 30k, but you will have some ability to off-heal those near you(which should be anyone with a brain wanting more damage) with Vigor(potentially strong vigor depending on stam pool and weapon damage at the time). The other advantage of this type of tank is pairing it with a healer wearing SPC and worm cult for even more group damage and sustain.

Or...you can go with the alternative of heavy armor wearing the same old Ebon and whatever the other current meta tank set is...for a much less interesting and active playstyle. To be clear, you should definitely farm Ebon and have a gold set in your inventory for those times you have to use it...but please, try something more interesting and original for the times other people(or certain dungeons and fights) don't force you to use Ebon

@josiahva Olorime and SPC give the same Major Courage buff. At first I was thinking Jorvulds when you brought up circle of protection, which could be an interesting combo. And of course PA is still a good set for tanks if Alkosh uptime can be soloed well (or you go medium armor PA/kosh). But yeah, most healers will be wearing either Olo or SPC nowadays, generally depending on how mobile dps can be vs how much they need to be. Having the tank throw out circles seems like a hassle for the dps. I haven’t tried it, but I imagine most of the time, based on the aoes a nb tank has, the Olo circle would be covered by the boss or in range of its cleave in most scenarios.

@NightAngel690 cool to hear about your progress. I’m not sure my setup would qualify as “stam” to you, as in it has a higher stam than mag pool, but still 6-8 abilities are mag vs 2-4 stam ones. Could give you more in depth info later if you’re interested, but gear setup is 5 tavas on the body, 2 lord warden, and then Alkosh when I can or witchman’s when I need to be selfish/am not with group. Works fine in most any vet trial, only one I don’t think I’ve taken him through yet is vmol (and I think I did vAS hm in probably plague, earthgore, and alkosh/spc or something, but I imagine it’d be doable in the sets I mentioned above too for a more experienced team).

This is true...a setup like this would require better situational awareness from the DPS...but circle helps with roll dodge for exactly that reason, and happily most bosses don't have cleave attacks...additionally a good tank can easily back up a few steps to draw the boss out of the buff circle while allowing the DPS to stand in it still all while keeping the boss in any relevant AoEs...but again, it requires more active skill from all involved and more movement...its a setup I would mainly run with a coordinated group made up of melee DPS to start with. I was not aware that vestments and SPC used the same buff though...that's kinda lame, really limits the appeal of vestments for a tank and makes an Alkosh/Powerful Assault combo more appealing

Jorvulds would indeed be useful for circle of protection though...also would be useful if using Imperium...but then you give up powerful assault. So for Defense maybe Imperium/Jorvulds/Lord Warden, and for those fights that need more damage it would be Powerful Assault/Alkosh/Blood Spawn

I think if I don’t have to run Ebon (aka puging) running with friends, I would instead run curse of dolyemish until I could get alkosh instead of pa. Since I’m usually always heavy attacking, that means it’s an extra 12k damage on top of my 3-5k hits. As for nb magic abilities, there’s a few to use for stam but it’s just buff’s and debuffs plus one AoE. (Aka summon shade, mirage,Refreshing/twisting path). I would be willing to try the new heavy set but I do know from experience that the circle costs quite a bit of stam to use. So far, I’ve found that I don’t really need it too much so long as I have summon shade active with shadow ult. I would much prefer to use the mystic guard and just link with the healer or try out the new psjic order abilities since the passive gives you a damage shield while blocking as well as major protection.

I do already have a pvp build picked out. I can’t do a looot of damage but I can kill most people. It does not to bad. I linked to my buddy who was a tanky healer and we were able to stand in breaches holding off most of the Zerg until they realized I couldn’t do anything but just fear them.

That’s what I run now! I used to only use it for pvp but now that it pulls enemies to me, I use it for both.

    My NB Tank is running

    2 Lord Warden

    5 Bloodthorns Touch

    5 Barahas Curse

    On a Dark Elf

Edit: I run all infused with tri-glyphs on mine. Thought I should mention that.

I tessted alcast’s build. It actually works pretty good and since I was already planning on running nocturnal’s favour, it worked out perfectly. One thing I would do is switch ebon out for plague as despite what everyone says, it doesn’t provide much benefits to deeps. No point in having an extra 1k health if the tank dies. Also, I would switch out the shadow ult for the siphon ult as it is more useful as an “oh crap! Button” in case the healer dies. Most of the people in my guild that I run with can usually self sustain and since the healer doesn’t have to focus on me, he can focus on keeping the deeps alive. Overall, it actually holds up better than most dk tanks. Better abilities to add to group deeps (if you go magblade tank) and way better burst heals for self sustain. (Dark cloak, soul siphon *mine heals for 30k* and healthy offering). The only thing it lacks is damage shields but you could always run bone shield.
