Can penetraiton works on shields? or can you crit a shielded person? how status effects work exactly?(poison and fire status) Is there any guide for these kind of questions? There is a perfect guide for damage mitigation for example.

Edit: i asked about status because my dark elf supposed to be immune to burning status effects but i some times have that burning effect on me. i assume there are 2 things which confuses me?

Shields ignore penetration (because they have no resistance to penetrate)
You can crit a shielded person, but for 0% extra damage (still counts as crit for proccing sets etc.)
Poison/fire is a DOT that has a chance to be applied to you when you take fire/poison type damage (or special abilities, sets etc. cause this).

Don't take what people said too seriously.

    According to UESP's combat page:

    Attack type

    Weapon enchantment's damage = 20% base chance
Single-target direct attack ability = 10% base chance
    Area-of-effect abilities = 5 % base chance
    Single-target damage-over-time abilities = 3% base chance
    Area-of-effect damage-over-time abilities = 1% base chance
Destruction staff Light or Heavy attack = 0% base chance

thanks. after i asked the question i found these on alcasts site. So my killer blade(which deals disease) has 10 percent chance to apply minor defile?

Yes, unless the enemy is immune to being diseased, for example because it is an argonian or has a jewelry piece enchanded with a disease resist glyph.

Dark elf is indeed immune to burning status effect, but not to other sources of fire damage-over-time, like having a DOT from an ability on yourself(burning embers from a DK, or fire staff flame reach, etc.).

Alright thank you for answers. One more thing. Crit deals 0 extra damage you mean they dont crit. Crit makes you attack deal %50 more damage but you cant do that to shields? Still your crit chance may tick?

So overall, Lover, thief and shadow is underwhelming in pvp? Especially against sorcs? I guess Warrior or Tower(mostly warrior) is the way to go.
