i think everyone agree's that animation cancelling is beyond broken, i dont know why it even exists. we dont need more things without any counterplay and there is zero counterplay against someone using animation cancelling.
"The red pill and its opposite, the blue pill, are a popular cultural meme, a metaphor representing the choice between:

Knowledge, freedom, uncertainty and the brutal truths of reality (red pill)
Security, happiness, beauty, and the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue pill)"

Compared to people that I've ignored = I am 18% more insightful, 20% less agreeable, and 88% more awesome.

AC works well. Nothing broken about it.

Heck, Zos even upped the anti on AC in it's most basic form for the second year in a row. Clearly this is not changing.

Besides, I want to be able to block an incoming attack which is priority for me.

BTW, starting off a thread with "everyone agrees" is a certain sign few will agree.

So, if I'm in the middle of an animation for an attack, I shouldn't be able to break the animation in order to block or roll dodge if I see an incoming attack?

That's a form of animation canceling we dont often think about, but its very important to having a fluid, reactive combat.

Or for that matter, should I be locked onto one bar during a long animation that exceeds the global cool down to prevent bar swap canceling?

There's a lot of animation canceling we do naturally as a part of simply playing the game.

I don’t find it broken, it is designed to make skilled players out perform less skilled ones. I am cool with that. But at least give us heavy attack meta where animation cancel result in less a dps gap.

During level up, the advisor suggests weaving light attacks between skills. I assumed this was prep for weaving and AC. It’s an in game hint...

I remember an old online rpg called naverwinter ( bioware )in which you could override the initiative queue by swapping weapons during the attack animation, thus disallowing a pve creature from attacking, having reset the initiative queue. I worked as a script monkey for a game world for that game and did find a way to block it. The players were far to use to using the AC though so I left as is and simply made things harder to complete, totally screwing over the players that could no longer keep up, due to them not having learned AC or simply due to their lack of ability to pull it off. But, all my loyal players used ac and I didn’t want to chase them off.

Seen it before. Zoe is in too deep to pull out now. I would practice ac if I was the op. I did that in eso, mah deeps is finally growing.

AC is one of the smart utilization of game mechanics. I don’t think it’s anywhere near broken.

Nothing is preventing you from light attack weaving.

An increase in power based on player skill rather than raw stats is actually a great thing. This game could use some more things like AC.

    Wrong.

It was never designed to be used in the way that it currently is, the original intention was so that you could break off an attack in order to block.

Zos decided to call it a feature rather than a bug so that they wouldn't have fix it, as that would have meant combat would have had to be re done from the ground up.

    To the OP:

AC is, for good or ill, with us for the long term, exactly for the reasons I've given, so don't take a blind bit of notice of those who tell you it was always intended to be used the way it now, because it wasn't.

The changes to light and heavy attacks and resource pools over the last 18 months makes me think AC as we know it is going to change BIG TIME in the near future.

On the German forums a dev said BIG combat changes are coming in the future, they just didn’t want to cram it all into Summerset.

AC is one of the problems with power creep in the game. Yes I think you should be able to block mid ability or dodge roll mid attack, etc. as someone who AC a lot, you really should have to follow through the complete animation in order for the damage to register. If you cancel like you do now, the damage simply should not register yet your still able to block, dodge, etc mid attack.

I mean face it, it’s silly roll dodge canceling a Reverse Slice for example...I felt really dirty killing people like that, it’s look absolutely ridiculous.

You can still have fast reactive fun combat without clipping animations and having the damage register like we do now.

Until they change it I’m going to continue to do it because I really have no choice. I don’t really find obscuring my Dawnbreaker animation as skillful, nor did I find roll dodge canceling a Reverse Slice skillful either, I do find to be quite the button mashing fest though.

When I was animation canceling Bloodthirst with light attacks after dotting and bleeding someone up my light attacks never even rendered on screen, yet they would hit players for 9-10k once you got to 25% health thanks to Kvatch Gladiator, but hey...obscuring animations is “skillful gameplay” round these parts....
