I have been here for 3 years and have never seen one even estimate on downtime. Is this normal?

It was a bad joke, sorry. But they should really communicate more - there isn't even a thread for downtime in the updates/patches thread.

You should now, after 3 years, know that it is usually 10am EST. Consider they are launching a whole chapter/dlc, I’d be prepared to potentially wait past then too.

They don't give ETAs because they may not always be accurate due to outside factors they can't account for.

Generallly speaking the standard maintence is around four hours, meaning in about 45 minutes.

Realistically, it usually takes one or more delays of about for hours. A more realistic expectation is 12, or around four in the evening.

There is a big note in the forum banner?

They never give an ETA as there might always be complications. It's impossible to predict and the outrage from the community when ETAs aren't met isn't worth giving one.

They have to shutdown all the servers, replace/fix broken units, update server software, backup all the game data, add the patch, reboot the servers. There are prolly more steps, but whats important is that at each of these steps numerous complications can happen.

After that nightmare that was the dragonbones release and all the maintenances during the last event I hope they take their time and make it all proper so we don't log on only to be told "Servers are coming down again" after 30 mins of playing.

if all goes well then an update this size usually takes 5-7 hours.

If there are issues then expect it to be anything from 8-12 hours...

Lets hope there are no major issues ! :)

They have done this 1000 times already they should have a good idea how long it takes. It wouldn't take much effort to actually give an ETA...

Well, Gina said, when all is going well somewhere late morning - guess in EDT - this is an ETA actually.

Seriously, it is a big system so it take time and posting ETA will just result in more upsetting post when it is not DIFOT.

given past experience, once the update is out, expect a major bug to make it through which requires the servers to be taken down tomorrow for a bit, too.

I think it's gonna happen. Players will be talking in zone about not being able to leave/join groups, friends list being deleted, not in guilds any more, in pvp gates will still be up with no health even when ballistas/trebs are hitting them, then.........servers down for maint in 15 mins message.

Then hours of maint. That's on the eu server of course, na will be fine.

ETA's are a horrible thing to give out in the software world. They are hardly ever accurate and people seem to get more angry at an incorrect ETA than an ETA that never existed at all.

It's okay, we all feel the pain because we love playing it.
ZOS will start worrying if nobody post anything like this cause it mean most don't care about the game being down anymore.

I have asked for this before and they have had an ETA on something but cannot remember what it was.

Those that say there would be uproar if it was not meet with are correct that is exactly what happened.

But the clue is in what ETA actually means (Estimated time of arrival). One should not complain if the time goes over the whole idea of ETA is to cover those same possibilities of problems others mention here.

People will complain some even complain about both sides of the same argument.

I for one would like to see the ETA but know it will not happen due to more complaints when they do.

So OP whilst I agree with you I think we will have to live with the way things are now.

Though I still don't get why the Patch Notes are not up?

I think at the moment Gina posts them when she gets to work.

There must be a way to automate the post so it appears as soon as the patch goes live.

I suspect the process of updating the servers involves deploying the functionality in smaller chunks - allowing for a problem in one area (lets say a new dungeon) not necessarily having to stop the whole implementation.
If that is how they work (its how I work on a banking system) - then I could understand that they wouldn't publish the patch notes before they knew what was successful.
