    From The Alchemist's Formulary :
Dreugh wax is a tough, waxy substance scraped from dreugh shells.

So there we have it, you scrape it from the shells!

Why are the wolve etc of tamriel licking/scraping/(who knows what elsing) the shells of dreughs?

Because ZOS needed a game mechanic and that was the best they could come up with? I mean do you really think that elegant lining is just popping off some spun cotton?

But Elegant Lining is not something that has the species it comes from in its name

Not sure how that matters, they're both ridiculous things to just pop out of a tanned hide. I mean normal lining for clothing comes from plant fiber for pete's sake, that's from a whole different biological kingdom!!

Insects (and likely land arthropods in general, which dreugh would fall under I guess) have a waxy layer on their exoskeleton to prevent desiccation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desiccation_tolerance#Integument

Which incidentally is why diatomaceous earth works as an insecticide: it mechanically destroys that layer and causes them to desiccate.

Sold for thousands of gold? Geez I think I am selling them to the trader for what 3 or so gold. What am I doing wrong here?

    @Davor

There are some things worth selling to NPC Vendors, like

    1. Completed Foods, Drinks and Potions/Poisons you made to level a Craft. Or, ones you made to use up extra ingredients (which can be a good money maker).
    2. Trash weapons and armor you don't need/want to decon or research are good to sell to NPCs Vendors.
    3. Tier 6 Green Recipes are best Vendored too if you don't need them.
    4. Trophies for Fishing and Monsters should be Vendored

Everything else should be sold through a guild store. Note you don't need to use a Guild that has a Kiosk, but it can help with sales if you do.

Thank you for this. Sadly I don't know nothing still after 4 years on how to play ESO except for single player. I still know very little what ESO really offers.
Not my quote but I love this saying

"I would pay It for support. But since they choosed we are just numbers and not customers, i dont mind if game and zos goes to oblivion"

    Seriously tho, nice info.

So I bumped into this article which explains more about the dreugh and where the wax comes from, very interesting read, but I think the answer was provided already https://www.imperial-library.info/content/general-information-dreugh
