When i solo i use the clannfear as a tank unless i am trying to run group content solo. Solo i dont use a shield at all. Im all damage and actually with a clannfear need neither a shield nor a heal. This is for normal solo content. Totally different if im doing something like group content solo or maelstrom and some such.

Several people are saying the same thing. Solo needs one build, and group needs another. There needs to be more advice/assistance/bribery in the game to push that transition, and weaning sorcs off the Clannfear is part of that.

It's definitely not for the self-heal; too high cost. I have two magsorcs; one is with a clannfear and the other is without any daedric summoning. As a veteran player, of course, I don't need the clannfear (or any combat pet like the bear for Warden), but, with 15 toons, I just like variety. So one has a combat pet; whereas, the other ones does not.

Clannfear would be great for sorc tanks if the cost was in-line with Green Blood, the DK equivalent. Instead, it's something like 7k Magica per squeeze.

Dragon Blood is 33% of missing health plus buffs and about 40% cheaper. Clanfear is 35% of max health. On my DK, I pre-cast Dragon Blood for the buffs, and recast it in an emergency or to keep it active. On my Sorc, I cast the clanfear heal a little earlier.

It´s what you have got early on when levelling, and I imagine it´s no terribad on high health builds.

I use the Clanny purely because I like him, I like the Twilight Matriarch too, some of us don't really care for all this min maxing nonsense and prefer to enjoy the game play and for most content that's perfectly fine.

That being said my pet bar is my back bar and when I want to take care of things in a brusque and business like fashion I swap to my front bar but I enjoy it less than running with the Clanny.

A quick bar swap to unsummon the pets is also handy for when I get to town and then my flappy thing doesn't annoy other players.

This. ^ I love my clannfear for the same reasons others have mentioned. His vocalization when not in combat is soothing. He's cute. He's a pretty good tank, he has a good heal and does some damage. If you don't care about min-max, which I don't, then he's a great companion. I don't like the other morph because the scamp is just downright ugly and not enjoyable as a companion. The only thing I would change about sorc pets (other than ultimate, obviously) would be for them to need only one button to toggle on/off so as not to take up slots on both bars. Toggle on, stays on until you hit toggle again. Their "special ability" can be a skill on the bar like all others. Separate pet button would work for wardens too.

This is actually one of the reasons I don't play my sorc. I want the damn clannfear, but if I want to push more than 15k DPS I need to use the sinfully-ugly scamp.

Could easily get over 25k dps using the Dino.

It costs 7k mag (making it literally the worst heal in game)
    It deals very little damage
    It no longer holds aggro
    Low damage

I even have a sorc tank and I'll pick matriarch over the pile o dino that is clannfear.

My magsorc is happy running matriarch and clannfear when soloing world bosses. The clannfear is a good tank - invincible when feeding him empowered ward and matriarch heals. Elegant as can be to lay down AoEs, spam heavy attacks, keep clannfear shielded/healed. Matriarch and sorc typically take exactly zero damage during such fights.

That said, I drop the clannfear for Inner Light on both bars when not soloing WBs. Problem with allies and clannfear is that clannfear loses aggro and allies get any heals from the matriarch.

For heals, I've tried Dark Exchange - which is pretty good but you lose the pet buffs to health and Necropotence magicka when dropping all pets. I've also tried running combat prayer and resto staff on back bar but lose the pet buffs again and either give up EleDrain or have to put it on front bar (ugh). Matriarch as only pet is my preferred mode. I get the buffs, her heals are solid, she contributes a bit of dps and, most importantly to me, I can share her heal with allies which is very helpful in dungeons since the matriarch heal is so easy to use and beats my healer's BoL for pure burst power.

    - How often do you see them?
    - All the time.

"...The clannfear's attacks deal Physical Damage plus an additional 15%..."

    WHY?! Selfheal? Come on!

Clanfear does dual role. Both tank and healer. I know a solid player who solo DLC veteran bosses on hard mode and imperial city bosses , DLC world bosses like an easy cheese. He always uses clanfear. He has high health of 30K with 30K solid single target & 60k multi target sustained dps. Clanfear AI is solid and easy to control than stupid matriarch or tormentor or bird or whatever it is . Matriarch AI is downright stupid and completely unreliable. Many people call it twilight betrayer. Clanfear is invaluable on solo play. AI is pretty solid and reliable , provided you know how to control and pull the aggro.

Instead of fixing the issues with matriarch pet AI, the genius in ZOs nerfed that clanfear with pretty unreasonable healing cost. EIther they dont know how to fix it or lazy. Clanfear is not a problem in PVP and no one complained about it. Its only burst heal for scorer tank. ZOs logic." Nerf usable and correctly implemented skill to be on par with useless and unreliable skill"

Why the genius in ZOs nerfed clanfear healing which they initally implemented perfectly ? There are so many issues in the game to be fixed.

If you are talking about PVP its different story. I dont know why so many noobs are using though.

I solo often, so I use the clannfear as a tank. the damage is irrelevant to me. Any damage at all is just a bonus.

the scamp is still the better tank. same health and same resists but way better damage.
The clanfear has an taunt, the scamp don't.
I used the Clannfear a lot as a squishy noob. When you are soloing at low level he can be great. I switch the Twilight Matriarch in if I'm doing a dungeon with no heals or a low level healer who needs a boost, its burst heal isn't to be sneezed at and has kept a group alive more than once. Then the imp of course for damage, with the Necro set you can get some pretty good numbers. I like my pets, they keep me company, never disagree and don't write hate whispers or trash-talk in zone chat
Clanfear is nice as an noob doing public dungeons. He is nice for soloing group dungeons and world bosses later.
He might has some utility for an tank but takes up two slots but don't know tanking enough.
For everything else, scamp for DD, matriarch for healer, sorcerer healers are very good for group dungeons.
Now for kick: An argonian healer named "only heal himself" with an clanfear in an dungeon would be insanely funny.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Clannfears are super cute - in my opinion, the cutest monsters/creatures in this game  They look funny, they sound cute - their footsteps, their idle noises, their battle cries <3

Before nerfs, more than a year ago, I used to use Clannfear on my mag and stam sorcs as portable tank - he never lost aggro and hardly ever died to bosses or adds. On magsorc I also used Twilight Matriarch as portable healer - so when I went in dungeon alone, I actually went in team of 3 :D
I also used him on stamsorc for some time after One Tamriel; he was my notable companion in my adventures with Dark Brotherhood quests and dailies - it was hilarious to sneak together with Clannfear! And if I was spotted and guard started chasing me, my brave Clannfear risked his life while I successfully run away :)
Even after pet nerfs (I think it started with Homestead), I still have skill points invested in Clannfear on my stamsorc - sometimes I summon him to kill critters for me, and I feel like a hunter with a hound :)
Memory of our great adventures together is all that's left :'( Now he is squishy, fails to hold aggro properly, and can't remain in passive state as commanded because after you do heavy attack he starts fighting again.

    When I walk in a dungeon "solo" ... :D

I run Clannfear on my Argonian Magicka Sorcerer... But he's also a tank, so that self-heal is pretty great.

I do think part of the reason is that new players pick the Clannfear is that they see that it does 239 base physical damage (using baseline numbers from uesp) while the volatile Familiar only does 159 base shock damage, the same as the unmorphed version and believe that the Clannfear is an upgrade.

Also, many new players who are just starting solo content probably kill enemies pretty quickly and probably don't see the final pulse stun as anything useful. Oh and there's the assumption, although incorrect, that the Clannfear will have much more health than the Familiar, especially if they have seen Clannfear pets running around before they are able to morph their own pet. Looks can be deceiving, I know I assumed that until I chose the Volatile Familiar on another character and realized I was wrong.

Clanfear covers that awkward phase when:

    1. The Sorc has no damage shields yet.
    2. The Sorc hasn’t leveled Resto staff high enough yet for good heals (healing ward).

That’s probably why you see it, the heal is a good reason to use it and then re-spec the morph later. It costs so little to respect morphs.

I will never use the scamp. My clannfear has been with me since I started the game all those years ago. When I was running about in Craglorn, that little guy helped me solo almost every single delve/quest city. Of course, now that I'm running around the EP, doing all the World bosses "solo", I have included the Matriarch for the multiple healing effect. It's quite a team.

I'm actually quite happy to see more people using the clannfear. I don't think I've seen that ugly little scamp since, well, when CWC came out. Maybe even before that actually.
