I ask only because Im a solo player too and don't PvP much myself but I do have an interest in going for emp one day

It all depends, when you PvP you'll see a lot of names that consistently hit top ten and those are the people who run 4 man groups with tailored setups.
Group play (4-6) is best when trying to get AP as you can burst keeps yourselves and take down groups of enemies if your strat it down. Note: You don't have to be in a group but be able to hear one another thus making it even easier to get AP.

I for one play solo as well & I don't have a PvP guild. First thing I do when I wanted to go for emperor (Crowned again a few days ago, that was my 10th/11th time) is make sure before the reset takes place, I need to get my AP buff.
Next thing I do is plan where to go so I can make the right choice e.g defending a keep versus attacking one.
