Why does my speed slow down when I jump while sprinting?

Heh, no one ever said ESO’s jumping physics made sense, ever.

ESO jumping physics are like the heavy attack physics. They make no sense. When is the last time you gained more stamina from swinging a hammer as hard as you could, as opposed to lightly waving it.

You don't physics much, do you. Once you leave the ground, you maintain your forward momentum except as it is reduced by drag. The drag is generally lower once airborne because of the tuck position that's naturally assumed.

Since you brought up Physics, lets talk about that. How are you going to overcome the loss in velocity cause by the drag unless your feet are on the ground to propel you forward.

Besides, when have you even seen a character in this game go into the "Tuck" position?

The loss in velocity due to drag is negligible for the duration of the jump.

And I just pressed the jump button, and my character's knees came up. That presents a smaller cross-section, thus reducing drag.

That is in now way considered a tuck position. The knees are barely brought up towards the waist, not to mention towards the chest which is a real tuck position. And the arms are flung out wide negating any benefit to the slight bending of the knees.

Also, everyone is overlooking the real reason we slow down when jumping. The Flippity Flaps on the Hips of the armor.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    It’s lag.

Sprint is a status effect with a 1s duration that your client has to constantly send to the server. If you are lagging the message might get delayed and if you jump during one of those delayed moments it’ll slow you down bc the server says you weren’t sprinting when you jumped.

The reason they have been messing with how sprinting and jumping is due to a bug that they recently caught up on. The basics of the bug were to input a change in direction from a strafe to a diagonal strafe, sprint, then jump. For some reason the input change would cause your acceleration to go crazy when sprint started. so now zos I believe has removed the first "tick" of sprint. If you want to do a sprint jump, now you need to press sprint and wait a second before jumping.

    ex of old bug:
    a >w+d >sprint >jump

This only worked on flat terrain though, but to use it on non flat terrain if you used the RP walk function you could use it anywhere with little timing involved. however the using the rp walk function limited what you could do for bunny hopping. essentially whenever you land you are in a "slide" animation during that animation you could input a directional change and another jump without the need of using sprint again. thus you could move faster than sprinting without the cost, and you can cast while doing it (dark deal/psijic/etc)

This wasn't anything new in the game, just a few patches ago people picked up on the rp walk part of the bug and abused the *** out of it.

also I did report the bug

Because you are not applying forward power when your feet are not on the ground, no traction.

It is the games where you stay at the same speed or even accelerate that are the weird ones.

Which would defy Newton's First Law of Motion. An object in motion stays in motion at the same speed until acted upon by an opposing, unbalanced force. If you run full speed and then jump, you will remain traveling at your run speed until you touch the ground again, not while you're in the air.

Omfg did you ever heard about air resistance. You are good at copy/paste Wikipedia tho.

This is dumb because irl when you jump you actually tend to accelerate by putting in a big oomf, hence all the sayings like ‘jump ahead’ ‘leap forward’ etc

Something very noteworthy that could give a clue to the programming behind this all is if you simply run of a ledge or cliff you *cannot* cast while falling, however if you jump off the same ledge you *can* cast while falling. Go figure

And how can we change forward momentum direction while in mid air DURING said jump?! The sheer physics are mind boggling!

Dragons flying around, ok. Talking cats, ok. Time wounds, magic portals, glowing horses, tigers, wolves, giants and monsters, all ok.

But nooooooo, the physics don't make sense.

    Damn, where's that unsub button?
