Hi everybody,
I recently started playing ESO again after a longer hiatus and I really enjoy the Morrowind and Homestead content in addition to the Skyrim/Morrowind feel that comes with the PVE content.
(I am not really a PVP or group-PVE player and see the game more as a filler - albeit an amazing one - until the next solo Elder Scrolls title is released.)
Since I am playing the game like I would play Skyrim, I do notice a few odd quirks that are mostly likely caused by the game being designed as an MMO, but I do feel that some of these could (and should) be addressed in future patches.
1.) Trash items
Coming from past Elder Scrolls games, I am used to picking up most items I come across and later selling (or hoarding) them. I noticed that a lot of the items that would be vendor trash in other MMOs (f.e. voidsteel daggers or shadowspun boots) have a value of 0 gold when sold and also almost never yield any resourced when deconstructed. This is a bit weid, since one can also loot random chests of drawers and get stuff like chamber pots and balls of lint which a fence will happily pay 40 gold for. At some point I noticed I no longer bothered with picking up random items cluttered throughout the world at all, because of all the worthless items in the inventory.
I guess the idea was to keep players from looting high item count/low risk areas for too easy money. Another line of reasoning could have been that players looting every single item in sight would slow down random group dungeons too much. It still feels strange though and could be alleviated by assigning a value of 5 to 20 gold to vendor trash items.
For high level/cp players in group content this value is not enough to justify going out of their way to pick up every item, but it would be enough to make it a fun side activity while doing solo PVE content.
The value of items could even be linked to Champion Point progress.
example: void steel dagger
No points in The Shadow: 5 gold
10 points in The Shadow ("Fortune Seeker") 10 gold
30 points in The Shadow ("Merchant Favored") 15 gold
75 points in The Shadow ("Treasure Hunter") 20 gold
Monetary implications for Zenimax/Bethesda: none (maybe slightly positive, because people would need more inventory space and would buy more inventory upgrades in the Crown Store, but the effect should be rather minor)
2.) Pets & Costumes as quest rewards
I really liked the fact that players can now get a mount, costumes and some pets with the new leveling reward system. This surely also serves to get players accustomed to the Crown Store, but it is nice to see a way to get vanity items in-game without spending real money on it.
So far there have been too few ways to get non-progress related items in the game, especially as I always thought of farming pets and mounts as a fun activity in other MMOs.
It would be nice to see more costumes and pets added as quest rewards for short questlines in future patches (like the Scarlet Judge in Morrowind).
Monetary implications for Zenimax/Bethesda: Negative in the case of players who would be content with the free pets/costumes they get and won't spent money or Crown Crates. But I will be honest enough to admit that I personally am usually not content with the free stuff I get (since those costumes are mostly the more boring ones) and getting players "hooked" on the costume idea might actually increase sales for Crown Store costumes and pets.
3.) Housing & Furniture
It would be nice to get the Dunmer-sytle boat and smaller rowing boats as a (Crown?) furniture item, especially as we now have a new pirate cove in Summerset to decorate.
It would also be nice to get more storage options that are not just the same model of chest. Maybe a cheap 15 slot backpack or a medium priced 45 slot wardrobe.
Monetary implications for Zenimax/Bethesda: Furniture Bundle! Woohoo! ;-)
4.) Pets and hirelings
A lot of my characters in past Elder Scrolls games were conjurers or traveled in the company of hirelings ("I am sworn to carry your burderns...") and it would be nice to get that option for PVE content. (This has also been a trend in 'recent' MMOs, as Star Wars TOR, WoW and Final Fantasy XIV all offered npc companions/hirelings in one capacity or another.)
To be clear, this should be an option for PVE areas only. Hirelings should not be summonable in group dungeons, trials and pvp zones. If a player with an active, non-merchant hireling joins a group the hireling should be automatically dismissed.
The scripts for hirelings are already in the game, as some quests already give you npc companions for a limited amount of time (f.e. one of the last quests in Coldharbour).
If the vocie actors are available, you could even tie this feature to quest or achievement progress.
Possible choices for hirelings (by function):
tank
dps (melee)
dps (ranged - bows)
dps (ranged - magicka)
healer
service
Possible choices for hirelings (by npc):
Darien Gautier (melee, condition: Daggerfall questline complete, might need additional storyline ;-) )
Gabrielle Benele (ranged - magicka, condition: Daggerfall questline complete)
Eveli Sharp-Arrow (ranged- bows, condition: Orsinium DLC complete)
Quen (melee, condition: Thieves Guild DLC and Quen storyline quests compelte)
Dark Brotherhood Initiate (melee, condition: Dark Brotherhood DLC complete)
Flame Atronach (ranged - magicka, Crown Store or Crown Crate Superior Reward)
Cold Flame Flame Atronach (ranged - magicka, Crown Store or Crown Crate Legendary Reward)
Wolf (melee, Crown Store or Crown Crate Superior Reward)
Bloodfiend (melee, Crown Store or Crown Crate Superior Reward)
Khajiit merchant (service, Crown Store or Crown Crate Superior Reward, comes with the voiceline "Khajiit has many wares", because this one likes it)
A vanilla option ("Hired Guard" or "Hired Mage") should be available via quest (see point 2, above).
The easiest way to introduce them to the game is via the assistant menu with a cooldown of 5 minutes. (This way you don't need a new skill line or menu option.)
Monetary implications for Zenimax/Bethesda: This is a new type of item that people will pay money for in the Crown Store. What is not to linke? ;-) And as it is solo-PVE-only it will not adversely affect group gameplay or PVP.
I do hope you like my ideas and maybe you have some suggestions of your own! :-D
