[Poll] If Crown Crates contained...

...crate chains would you be more interested in them? For those that dont know, a crate chain is system of RNG crates in which you open the top tier crate and you have a chance at a slightly lower tier which in turn gives a chance at crates from a slightly lower tier, so on and so forth.

This is the start of an example of a crate chain:

Scalecaller:

*Blue tier =1 Reaper's Harvest
*Purple tier = 3 Reaper's Harvest
*Gold tier = 3 Flame Atronach
*Apex tier= 8 Flame Atronach

Flame Atronach:

*Blue tier =1 Dwarven
*Purple tier =3 Dwarven
*Gold tier = 3 Reaper's Harvest
*Apex tier= 8 Reaper's Harvest

So an example of how this works is: Lets say you open 15 scalecallers

*15 scalercallers gives you 3 flame atronach and 10 reaper's harvest plus other scale caller loot
*3 flame atronach gives you 4 dwarven crates plus flame atronach loot.
*10 reapers gives you 3 more dwarven and 7 wild hunt plus reapers loot.
*7 dwarven gives you 8 storm atronach and dwarven loot.
*7 wild hunt gives you 4 storm atronach and wild hunt loot.
*12 storm atronach gives you storm atronach loot.

So you, in this example, end up opening 54 crown crates of which 15 are from the current season and the remaining crates are from a previous season. You pay the price of 15 crates. In this system the further down the chain you go the more common even the rarest rewards become. So with each new season that Storm Atronach mount you missed out becomes more and more of a possiblity because the older the season the more crates so now you are opening far more crates increasing the likely hood you will get that mount.

Also it allows people who missed previous seasons for whatever reason to have the chance at those items as well. For example i could never obtain the storm atronach mounts because i wasnt here. This would allow that chance. For those that love radiant mounts but feel like they wont ever get them, this can significantly increase their odds per dollar spent, for older radiant apex mounts and other items people want in the crates.
So if Crown crates contained crate chains to older seasons as some of the rewards would you buy them/more?

I sometimes buy crates, but crate chains would not convince me to buy more.

Nah not in practice, its more complicated to explain. Basically its like ordering 4 items from amazon. You get one box and open it. One of your items is in the box and also another box containing your other 3 items. So you open the second box and again their is another box and 1 of your items. You open the last box and find the remaining two items inside. In the case of the crates you dont know what items are in the boxes or how many boxes you will open. You just know you might only end up opening the original amount of boxes or significantly more boxes for significantly more older items.

Or none of your items you wanted are in any of the boxes and you have to spend more money and place another order, or just shrug and be happy with getting nothing you wanted and a bunch of stuff you would have never ordered in the first place.

The problem with that (for ZOS) is crown gems. At the lower end - when you have nothing/very little unlocked from the crates you're opening they give about 4 gems per crate. And with 54 crates that 216 gems - enough for 2 legendary rewards or 1/2 way to an apex reward. All for the price of 15 crates. And that's on top of the direct drops.

It's a nice idea for players - buy this seasons crates and get a pile of "retro" rewards thrown in, especially for people who buy crates periodically but don't get enough to get all the items. But it would make the current 'problem' of people building up enough gems in one season that they don't need to buy next seasons crates (unless they want to try for radiant apex mounts) even worse.

Which means ZOS would inevitably do something to 'balance it' and get people buying more crates again. Something like remove crown gems or reduce how many you get, or add even more radiant apex items which can't be bought.

Never say “never” and all, but they would have to provide a lot more value for me to buy them.

Yeah i thought of that. They would have some options:

    1) leave the gem exchange as it is.
    2) disable gem exchange for items that were in older crates even if its the same as the rewards in new crates such as tri pots.
    3) Increase what each tier cost in gems to balance out the new amount of gems you can get from exchange. So if you can get on average 3 times as many gems, make each tier 3 times as expensive as it is now.

One would be the best bang for the buck for players but isnt necessary if you buy crates regularly( say once season) as you will eventually own everything in the season you missed anyway. Three would be the most logical and easiest. The second would be the worst option both for ZOS( pain to code) and players ( you have to destroy a bunch of stuff that cant be converted to gems). Three is the most likely option which would be fine since the amount of gems you get to the amount they cost really wouldnt change.

Can we just remove crates all together and sell it's content for a reasonable price in the store?

Hell no. If I'm understanding this suggestion right, I'd be pissed if I purchased 15 scalecaller crown crates from this season and received like one item from the scalecaller season and 14 items from the Wild Hunt season. I already have all of the items from the previous seasons that I want. This would just be diluting the items.

You want older crown crate items? Suggest that they bring previous seasons back, like they actually have done before for a few days.

My option: "I already get what I intend to get out of each crate season, which is usually "nothing," so wasting my time with past items I already have or didn't want would actually make me buy less."

Like... Why do that? I'd prefer if they just continue the trend of bringing a few seasons back each year, and if they have to do anything at all involving "chaining," they'd make it so that the more crates you buy/open in an unbroken string, the better your chances of getting higher-quality items, or opening X-number of crates guarantees an Apex/Radiant Apex reward. Something like that.

No if you bought 15 scalecallers and got just 1 blue item per crate and nothing better than blue in all 15 you would end up with x amount of items from scalecallers and a smaller number of, in this example, reapers harvest.

If all blue tier items have an equal drop chance then you would have a 1 in 15 chance at getting a reaper's harvest crate. So on average, out of 15 crates, you would end up with all 14 blue tier items, and one crate from reaper's harvest.

Personally id rather have a reapers crate than a "line in the sand" emote. At least with the reapers crate i get a chance at something more interesting than an emote such as Skeletal Mount. Lets see... "line in the sand" emote or chance at a previous mount i dont have...hmmm choice is obvious. Also that reaper's crate would likely give me more gems than the "line in the sand" emote, so there is that.

This idea is just so absurd I really have no clue what to say. I suppose if you got more crates for the same current prices would be a slight improvement but to add older crates with the newer ones is just insane. It would incentive people to buy more because now they want items from those crates too. And the contents in the older crates most likely will not be purchasable with gems.

I'd buy crown crates if the pros outweighed the cons.. As in i always got something nice.. Throwing money away on garbage is not appealing to me.
