How to Haggle made Simple

With this event I've ran into several players whom don't seem to know about or how to "haggle" (or as Richard Rawlings would say, "gettin ya some of that," lol, other famous people come to mind but are more divisive lmao)

Simply put - When some asks for amount of currency for an item, they are more than likely asking roughly 30% more than they are willing to take.

I.e. if I ask for 60k gold for a motif, in reality I'm probably willing to take 40-50k for it (that "-" is where the "deal" comes in)

If I ask for 60k, you should hit me back with an offer between 30-40k (depending on whom you deal with) if I accept good for you! I'll probably come back at you with 45k-50k (depending on your offer) if you accept good for me! But this back and forth goes until an agreement is made (or not - never feel like you "have" to make a deal)

To sum up
Do not assume the asked price is the final price
Be willing to invest time to make the deal
Be willing to walk away
Don't call the person crazy for their initial asking price and run away

i don't haggle.... if selling stuff i give the price i will accept. if buying i will make one offer. both are based on extensive research into the 'value' of the pixels in question.

That would work in a perfect world.

Usually it goes down like this:

Before the late 1800s, in most cases, retail goods did not have a fixed price, and each customer would be expected to haggle with the store clerk. The Quakers, who found it immoral for different customers to pay different prices (now known as price discrimination) were an exception. In the 1870s, Quaker owned retailers in New York and Philadelphia began affixing physical tags to items, eliminating haggling.

According to pre-pubescent teens that play the game, the correct reponse to WTS:
"Lololol, I bought those for x amount yesterday you ______."
"No, considering I buy these daily for 10k, I'll be generous and buy them from you for 20k."
    "Scammer."

I don't play the haggle minigame. If I'm buying, I will either pay the asking price or if no price is listed, I'll make my best offer. If I don't like their listed sale price, I just don't bother. If I'm selling, I'll accept my posted price or if I don't list a price, I have one in my head that I will take if offered. I don't have time to play back and forth with other people outside of PvP. It's just a waste of time for both sides.

Prices are set based on the desperation of the buyer verses the seller. Better known as supply verses demand.

Typically in ESO folks are buying and selling based on someones previous negotiation.

OP you've done a service and here's hoping that folks will learn to "haggle" in a safe environment like ESO.

When I sell, I usually look at the TTC price, look at the bottom end, and sell it a bit cheaper just to get it over and done with.

When I buy it's usually off the TTC website and finding the merchant. No haggle stuff. The one time I did what might be called haggling was simply because I didn't have all the money they wanted, and I got my stuff, but meh. Haggling over gold that isn't even real seems sorta petty to me, I'd rather use the time saved other ways, like killing monsters.

Maybe I'm wrong though, what you all think?

My experiences with haggling have been a bit mixed.

Generally as the buyer I have to make the opening bid which is annoying as there is no bloody indication to go on what ballpark the seller is expecting. It makes it a bit more difficult to snag a bargain. So because of that I never make my best offer first. If I was selling I'd automatically look to inflate the price by like 25% of whatever the person offers because my assumption would be that they're trying to bid low :D If i'm happy with the price theres still room to make a bit extra.

I as buyer have also had to be very pushy to actually get the sale through.

But yes, the OP is correct haggling and negotiation does work in this game and its about being flexible and accommodating. No deal has to be pure cash, Motifs as make weights or stacks of materials are also valid enough imo.

I think due to the nature of the game I expect a degree of haggling and flexibility. If the seller won't engage then I won't buy from them. If you want to be obtuse then don't sell in zone chat and use the guild trader. IMO if you try and punt goods in the zone chat you are going for the quicker sale and thus should expect to sell below guild trader market value.

That's fine, if you wanna pay my initial asking price, great! Just know most will take less :). Also, there's the guild traders for that kind of experience (where I usually go to as well) just during the event there's a lot of people entering the market that never had this kind of experience before.

Keep in mind, when in zone, there's no "price tag", you're thinking like a grocery store - think more flea market, the people selling are there for a reason, a quick sale for a discounted price most likely. A listed price at a flea market is more like a set of guidelines rather than rules. ;)

Lmfao, I'd be tempted to say, I'll do 60 if you keep those dirty things away from me!!

If someone is civil and is willing to work with me, I'll end up going lower than I normally would.

But they may also lose potential sales to someone that looks at the price and thinks to themselves "that's overpriced by about $15" and the seller is thinking "I'd totally take $20 less than asking if only someone would ask".

The other day, I wanted to buy this person's motif. I asked how much. They listed an MM price of 50-60k gold. But my MM listed it from 25-35k. I told them I'd be willing to buy it for 30k. I would of probably gone up to 35k if they had countered with that. But they said NO WAY. So they next day I bought one off a trader for 25k. And there were numerous ones listed at that price all over. Perhaps the dude got his 50-60k price. I doubt it, though. They are probably trying to get rid of it at 25k and under. They should've sold it to me for 35k.

When I sell in zone, I give the price of the item, and it's the price I'll take. Generally I'm willing to barter; if I'm offering something for 60k, I might take 50k plus a couple of kuta, or 52k plus a tempering alloy - something that gets the person in the ballpark of 60k.

However, inevitably someone posts lowball MM or TTC prices in zone right after. I'm not sure why they do this; some say it's because they're helping other players "not get ripped off".

NOTE: just because a seller doesn't list at the absolutely lowest price all the time doesn't mean they're trying to rip people off.

Because they were hoping you'd offer something higher than 90k.

I don't sell in zone and the only time I'll buy in zone it's clearly someone who'd just trying to make a honest, quick trade because they want gold for tempers or gear or whatever, I'll help them out and might even give them a little more than what they asked for because i'm not hurting for gold.
