Pretty new to PVP. Is it a good idea to mix armor types?

I see a lot of builds online mix armor types. Is that a must? Example, a night blade magic build I saw has 5 light, 1 medium, 1 heavy armor. What are the benefits for doing that and does it make a big difference?

Mixing Armor types is beneficial if you have the Undaunted Mettle that gives you extra health, stam, and magicka for the number of different types of armor you have equipped.

In addition to the armor passives that don't need 5 pieces, though many medium builds can benefit from x7 medium.

Typically, you’re going to want to level up Heavy Armor and either Medium or Light, depending on if you’re a magicka or stamina build, early on. If you plan to min/max later on, having the 3rd armor type maxed to take advantage of Undaunted passives will be useful, but it’s not that big of an increase, and it’s easy to focus on maxing it out later if you decide you really want to.

    My thoughts for stam builds:

I've found 7x medium outweighs any of the undaunted variations (5/1/1, 5/2, or 6/1) when committing to a true medium playstyle (high burst, high mobility, high regen). The extra 2 pieces of medium gives: 8% recovery, 6% reduced cost, 6% sprint speed, 8% reduced cost on dodge roll, and some crit (can't recall the %). As an added bonus, there's also some RP/stamblade benefits with the sneak passive. Of course this playstyle is not very forgiving, so I could see 6med/1heavy or even 5med/2heavy as a good compromise during the learning curve.

Regarding the importance of utilizing this passive, it's more a matter of preference. As long as you have 5x of the one armor type that fits your build, you can play around with the extra 2 pieces and find out what works for you.

This and if you use 6 Light armor pieces the extra resistance from heavy and medium helps.

The location of the armor pieces is important as well. For example, if you are doing 5/1/1, you want your heavy armor piece to be your chest if at all possible. You want your medium piece to be your head and legs if possible. This gives you the most resistances.
