Am I missing something with crowns and crates?

Don't get me wrong, I love the ESO + and I think they have done a great job basically keeping this game as a subscription for what is offered with the ESO + ...but are there people that play the game using crowns and purchasing crates and items and DLC using them? ...maybe I'm missing something, but for the life of me I can't see how in any way it makes sense to do that...the DLC packs are crazy overpriced compared to just paying $15 at a time for some crowns and access to the DLC for a month at a time...the mounts are kinda cool but basically everything else in the crates seems stupid (you get better styles and looks from the regular game content)..so what is the appeal? I have to assume people are buying this stuff...why? Just wondering if i'm missing something...are people really wanting/buying haristyles, bedroom sets, etc...?? Thanks in advance for any insights.

Some people really like cosmetic items. It's not for everyone and that's cool too.

    Buy the DLC on sale.
Get the free crates unless there's something you really, really want.
Some furniture is only available from the Crown Store.
Buy new character slots for those sweet level up rewards and to experience the new tutorial for Summerset.

Personally, I spend my crowns on DLC that give new zones and costumes that look nice, dye well, and fit my characters.

Yes, people are really wanting to buy this stuff. That's why the crown crates are selling!

    Yes
    - I enjoy being able to change my hair any time I want
    - Several motifs are only available in the crown store, like Frost Caster
    - Occasionally I'll pick up Repair kits or Tri pots (usually for left over gems)
    - I've used race change and appearance change before (3 times since I started)
    - Some housing items I have gone for, like the fog.
    Maiden Maura - Xbox NA
Warden Ice Tank (By far my favorite) -RIP #Nerfmire
Stormproof, Shehai Shatterer, Mageslayer(solo tanked), Ophidian Overlord, Assistant Alienist, Boethiah's Scythe,Maw of Lorkhaj Conqueror, Divayth Fyr's Coadjutor
    Major
    Dragon Knight Healer (Since Homestead)
    Shehai Shatterer, Mageslayer,
    Warden 2x Bow DPS
Stormproof, Shehai Shatterer, Mageslayer, Ophidian Overlord, Assistant Alienist, Boethiah's Scythe, Maw of Lorkhaj Conqueror, Divayth Fyr's Coadjutor, Sunspire Saint,

PvP StamDen, Warden Healer, MagDen, Stamplar, StamSorc, DK Failed Attempt, NB Failed Attempt

Playing BiS isn't impressive, playing unique at BiS lvl, THAT's impressive.

Why do people buy a Rolex when a digital $5 Casio keeps time better?

I don't buy Crown Crates (obviously), but I do buy Crowns, and I have a second account that subsists entirely on Crowns (no ESO Plus). I would prefer full subscription, but I would also not have secondary accounts if it was full subscription.
    ESO Plus: No

Because they think it makes them look important. Just like when people buy expensive cars to give the appearance they are rich when in fact they are far from it.

Sadly though it does have an effect on people. There are videos on youtube where people dress as "rich" and they garner respect, and where they're dressed "poor" people look down on them. You seem like an individual that have learned to look pass that which is admirable however i feel folks like yourself are a minority ;-(.
