I don't think there is a way not to get caught. I used an invisibility potion and still got a bounty.

I did not, on two characters. I don't know if this is helpful, but I hid on the far side of the cart and reached through the tongues of the cart to grab the apples.

I also steal Princess without getting caught by mounting up, hitting Rapid Manuevers, and sprinting through Ebonheart through the left hand stairs.

This event annoyed me last year as I tried it first with my paladin-style templar who doesn't have anything to do with the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood (but who seemed perfectly suited to a Jester's Festival). Halfway through the achievements I found he couldn't complete them without stealing. Nor, incidentally, can he do all the Morrowind quests. Promoting DLCs is one thing, but there ought to be an alternative quest path for those who purposely avoid such courses of action.

I just love how veteran players with PvP skills and a ton of Thieves Guild experience are prone to tell everyone else including new players how easy such quests are to complete  !

Yeah, the Morrowind quests that required trepassing annoyed me, and I have a Silencer and Master Thief. Not every character is designed for stealth and trying to be stealthy on a character who isn't for a story mission is a real bother.

Similarly, I remember the outcry last year from players with paladin-type characters. ZOS seriously could have given you all the option to buy the apples for the same price as the bounty.

Good idea, will try it tomorrow, my nb thief however in medium DD rather than stealth gear failed. magic Warden healer made it because fools was fighting the npc.

Grinding just make you go in circles.

The game is very villainous in theme. It is quite hard to be an actual hero without avoiding probably a good 40% or more of content.

So far 3 out of 5 toons have gotten caught. Honestly not sure why i can get away with it on one toon and not with another when i do the exact same thing. Must be bugged. Either that, or that snitch guar is discriminating against certain ones of my toons.

You don't need to be a pacifist to be a hero! This wasn't an issue for "true good" characters even with the Thieves Guild DLC which could itself be easily avoided, it's the subsequent basic quests that include criminal activity that create the problem - and even that wouldn't be an issue if there was an alternative path to follow in order to complete the quest.

I did 6 characters today and every one was spotted while taking the apples. I just keep some pardon edicts onhand so I won't have to deal with the guards. I'm sure you could get the apple without being spotted if you do it exactly right, but who has time for that?

Yes. After having failed on all characters and at every trial last year, I decided to go full-on this year. I stole them from the far side of the chart, with a char having obtained all the Justice achievements, wearing a set that diminishes the distance at which one can be detected, with all the discretion (thieves guild, DB, medium armor...) passives unlocked. I waited that everybody around was looking in another direction *and* I took an invisibility potion. But I got caught at the very instant I looted them. I don't even know who saw me among the Ashlanders around... At this point, I think the quest is designed this way. Won't bother to try not getting caught tomorrow.
    My characters:
Main and crafter: A Breton magicka templar named Erwann Sorril
Alt 1: A Bosmer sorcerer named Tuuneleg
Alt 2: An Imperial dragonknight named Gaius Tullius Hastifer
    Alt 3: An Argonian vampire/nightblade named Observe-le-Xanmeer
Alt 4: A Nord werewolf/dragonknight named Sigurd Hurlevent
Alt 5: A Breton sorcerer named Gilian Sorril (he's Erwann's younger brother)
    Alt 6: A Khajiit nightblade named Jolan-dar
Alt 7: A Nord warden named Sigurmar Hurlevent (he's Sigurd's younger brother)
Alt 8: An Altmer templar named Oioriel
Alt 9: An Argonian stamina Warden named Danse-avec-les-Rainettes
Alt 10: A Redguard templar named Neemokh af-Corelanya
Alt 11: A Nord stamina sorcerer named Olga Écoute-Vent
Alt 12: A Breton magicka Warden named Ian Sorril
Alt 13: A Dunmer magicka necromancer named Ilmoran Dren
Alt 14: An Orc stamina necromancer named Norgol gro-Borziel
Alt 15: A Nord magicka necromancer named Thorgen Givresang
Alt 16: An Imperial magicka dragonknight named Publius Valeirus Hastifer (Just call him "Valerio" - he's Gaius younger troublemaker of a brother)
Main in NA (For collaborative events): A Breton magicka nightblade named Titouan Sorril (long-lost brother of Erwann and Gilian)

Even with invisibility potions or skill (if you are a NB) it is almost impossible because there is always some one who deliberately pulls city guards near that spot and even fights them... terrible quest design flaw ZOS...

I agree you don't have to be a pacifist to be a hero. I just find that a lot that there are a lot of villainous options. Try playing as a legit Redguard hero some time. Even if you accept being an Ashaba that doesn't mean you're into soul trapping and other such scummy evil behaviors.
