Is there actually any way to steal the apples without getting a bounty?

Seem to remember this from last year. No matter what you do, you get a bounty. Did it on maxed out thieving char & even though eye was closed - still got bounty.

I'm on a level 13 who does not have things maxed, but yeah, the eye was closed and I got bounty so now I'm sitting using up xp scroll time waiting for it to go away. I think the only time I ever successfully got the apples was when someone else had slaughtered all the npcs that could watch.

Dont know how but my Warden did it, all the rest got a bounty for no obvious reason

In the cart. You basically have to glitch the clipping of the cart to get away with this.

I wish I was surprised that they didn't fix this, but I'm not. I would have thought, if nothing else, shame at such shoddy design might have motivated them.

At least you knew ahead of time. This is my first year trying it and didn't know it was an achievement until after I tried. Now I have to wait until tomorrow.

Edit: I got by the cart fine, but I came out of sneak too early on he way back with the princess and got caught when the farmer wasn't even around.

For the achievement, I don't think it matters if someone sees you take the apples. I think it's just not getting caught while stealing the pig, so at the point when you give the apples to the pig and begin leading it away. I got the achievement on all my characters, but there was only one time where I didn't get a bounty for stealing the apples (either I managed that glitch or someone had killed all the NPCs in the area).

I did it this morning. I just crouched on the far side of the cart and waited until I was not seen. Stole the apple, no bounty. Did not use fancy potions or anything special.

I paid the bounty. Paying the bounty didn't give me the achievement

Was it a bounty for stealing the apples or a bounty for being caught by a guard after stealing the pig? If the former, again, I don't think that part matters for the achievement. But, I could be wrong since it was a year ago that I played, but I was only ever successful once in avoiding being caught stealing the apples, but I still managed the achievement on all my characters.

ETA: If you fail at any point during the quest to get the achievement, you can just abandon the quest and start over. You don't have to wait until the next day.

I only managed on my pure thief character who has all possible detection reductions...for the rest you can normally just outrun or stealth through the guards
@Donari you can switch to another char or log off. The bounty will go down too (just more slowly)

Yes! Use your rogue pots (tg quests or guild trader) or blade of woe the whole place!

It might take a couple of tries for this. The butcher appears at certain places and does scripted actions. Once you know those actions and places, it's easy to wait it out.

High cp nightblade with plenty into ledgerman and TG all medium, cloak before pick: nop.
managed today on an magic build as noobs was fighting everything in stable.
Simply sell of any stolen goods and pay the fine or use an get out of jail free card to clear bounty.
If running this on many alts your want speed more than anything.

The apple is a quest item and not considered stolen "loot". Turning yourself in and paying the bounty does not reset that stage of the quest, so you do not, in effect, "lose the apple."

Also, you do not get bounties from the guards with the pig. Only the Chef can "catch" you. Stealthing does nothing to prevent the chef from spotting you if you're inside her detection radius. Just sprint/mount back to the Jester's pavilion as fast as you can and you should avoid the Chef at her spawn points.

I managed to get double-fined today. I didn't notice that apparently someone had dragged a guard nearby, so the first time I grabbed the apples he nabbed me instantly.... before the quest registered the apple as picked up.

I parked every character I have who needs the achievement and isn't training horses in Ebonheart. I plan to grab apples, move to a safe spot and log out. When I get through them all, I'll log back into the first and see how that works.

I know it's possible to take the apples without getting seen, I just don't know how to regularly do it. It's just easier when some kills the NPCs first.

Coming back, I know if you take the left path and go behind the houses you can avoid the chef. The problem is you need to go through town and over the bridge to get back, and there are usually guards at the choke points. Last year I think I found you can slip by of someone else gets caught first. If all else fails, I have some invisi-pots and a counterfeit pardon I can try.

you dont have to sneak. you just have to avoid the chef trying to get its pig back

I just don't bother. Take the apple, get a bounty, find a guard, pay the bounty, carry on with quest.

1. As has been mentioned, use the side of the cart furthest from the entrance. Crouch and you'll just be able to see/steal from the basket of apples.

2. As soon as you've fed the apples to Princess run behind the huge rock that's just to your right. Wait for the chef to discover the theft and complain, then mount up and high tail it back to the Jester king.

Unless you're a Dunmer. If you're a Dunmer, you get auto-dismounted when you get near the Hist tree.

Of course, you can get back on when you get out of range, but still, a slight interruption in your "high tail"ing.
