Stupid Quest? "The Unquiet Dead"

Have to kill the Pale Sentinent and must use the Bone Scepter
The Bone Scepter is in my "Quest Item' spot
I fight the Sentinent and it says "use the bone scepter' but the freaking scepter is in my quest item spot
I cannot take it out, I cannot use it, all I can do is die over and over
How in heck am I supposed to kill somebody with an item that sits safely in the 'quest item' box?
