"It was a forbidden city for almost 50 years in the late Second Era, humans only being allowed in the ports at that time. These traders described the city as made from glass or insect wings, which gives the city a beauty that, by any account, would easily rival that of any found on the mainland. Imperial emissaries of the Reman Dynasty described the city as straight and glimmering, a hypnotic swirl of ramparts and impossibly high towers, designed to catch the light of the sun and break it to its component colors, which lies draped across its stones until you are thankful for nightfall."
First Edition Pocket Guide to the Empire

But no ZOS made with look like a generic European stone city.

"described the city as straight and glimmering, a hypnotic swirl of ramparts and impossibly high towers, designed to catch the light of the sun and break it to its component colors, which lies draped across its stones until you are thankful for nightfall" - This is literally what the city looks like. There's two contradictory descriptions in that passage you quoted: the first description sounds like an embellished and exaggerated story, almost a fisherman's tale, while the second description sounds like a realistic yet fantastical description of an actual city. People are just mad because there's no insect wings LOL!

I just noticed for the first time the elf queen has a (dead) bird on her head. Ha.

Anyway something on topic... hmmm. I think it looks good but nowhere near as magical and mystical as the lore makes it to be. Most stunning thing is the sky footage and the use of vibrant colors imo. You don't need to travel to banana lands to see cities made of stone and unusually tinted trees. The fauna may be interesting though.

I personally don't like the architectural style at all. And that has nothing to do with "insect wings" or even the lore descriptions of the island. What bothers me is that Zenimax chose to go for the most generic and mediocre design imaginable, when they could have done something unique and interesting.

And as I pointed out in an earlier thread, the early concepts of the island were likely more interesting than what we got, with unique styles for each town/city:
What's sad is that on the early zone concept it seems like they were actually going for a glass/crystal Alinor. A concept that apparently got scrapped sometime during development.
(These maps also existed for Wrothgar, Murkmire, and Hew's Bane, and are made early in development)

Also, in the top image you can see a distinct difference in architecture between Alinor and Shimmerene, like in Vvardenfell where every town/city had a unique architectural style. Now instead we get 3 generic, indistinguishable cities.

Alinor hasn't the exotic and pure fantasy look as i read on lore, but doesn't look so bad. At least we can have elder scrolls stuff 4 times a year.

Yup, and The Imperial City was nothing like it was described pre Oblivion too.

It's not glimmering, it's not hypnotic, it's not swirly, it's not even colourful.
    Not crystal/glass.

They couldn't be bothered making it unique looking so they made it as generic as possible
