Imagine in a perfect world where everything was balanced nothing was OP would you like to cherry pick your skills from a pool rather than be stuck with the skills your class comes with?

First, separate the lines Warden Style, one for each role. Then let people choose lines, a dps could pick 3 different lines from other classes. You get the idea.

There isn't a situation where I can imagine cloak, streak, and breathe of life existing on the same character with anything resembling fairness.

Free build, like the true Morrowind, is never going to happen in this environment.

They'd have to completely rework the entire game, and you've never seen imbalance like the imbalance such a system would create.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

      ...gah!
Now everyone was running the very same build with only the "best" skills, how boring! :p;)

On a more serious note - yeah, I get what you are thinking about, and it would have been nifty if they had made ESO that way. They might have to avoid any "best" or "super-effective" skills to prevent the "clone wars" horros that would make an MMO as boring as playing playing poker with only aces in a deck...

However, that ship has sailed, been set on fire and sunk a looong time ago.

And the people at ZOS certainly won't throw away their game and code an entirely new system at this point. So it makes little sense to even think about it.

If they ever make something else though... "FallOut Online" for example... then we all can hope to get a completely classless system!

I think that works well in single player games where you can have broken overpowered builds and it won’t affect anyone else, but in MMOs it would all just end up being homogenized into “Do you want your 10,000 damage ability that looks like a green bird or a lightning bolt?”

I played TSW, and that’s pretty much what it was, a massive list of abilities that all did pretty much the same things.

It's a nice thought, but it would kill any true competition. Many enjoy the competitive aspects of this game, and access to all skill trees cannot be suitably implemented in an environment where such competition exists :(

It would lead to stupidly OP broken builds.

For as much as I despair how much my templar has been gutted and nerfed, if I were allowed to be able to cherry pick the Critical Surge skill, I'd be a lot stronger. And that's not even considering adding things like Cloak and Shimmering Shield.

This would lead to zero build diversity. Everyone would run the exact same meta build. Everyone likes to imagine it'd be a crazy, open world full of wildly unique builds. It wouldn't. It'd be all made up of whatever BIS combination Alcast found.

      No.

As much as it differs from the single player elder scrolls games, the class system in ESO is necessary and adds more to the game than it detracts.

The only time a no-class system worked in an MMO, that I've seen, was with pre-cu starwars galaxies, and even then you were limited to basically two and a half skill lines, and you had to invest points in the entire skill line to get the best skills. Here, where you just unlock the top skills and can use them separate from the rest of the tree they're in, it would lead to extremely OP skill combinations and inevitably unforseen interactions between abilities.

Not to mention that a revamp of the entire class system would cost a huge amount of time, money, and effort from ZOS developers, with very little, if any, return on the investment. It's a bad game decision as well as a bad business decision.

      No.

Would kill what little diversity there is in game.

As it is, build a stam or mag dps of different classes and half your skills are still the same across builds - do this and then every skill would be the same.

It would also make the game harder to balance and limit zos's ability to put interesting effects on some abilities b/c they'd have less control over what they combined with.

It is only achievable by making everyone the same. The heck with that, I'ld rather be unbalanced.

I think that classes should... mostly... go away.

That is, they should act more like oblivion, where they improve certain skillines, but you can still choose from all of them. Maybe give a 20% buff to skills currently in the skillines - and maybe have a single class skill line for passives only

This way casuals would have choice of anything they want, but min maxers would need to still choose their class carefully...

Classes actually create more diversity. There are a few signature moves you'd see EVERYONE use if class restrictions were removed. It would be even more of a homogenized mess.

Sadly, so far that one is only a fan-dream. But I expect in fullness of time, it too will come. Can't really see them not making an FallOut themed MMO someday when they run out of other stuff... (I just hope they will take the opportunity to really push the envelope of a "M" rating with that one, the wastelend is supposed to be all violent and naughty! And I loved how the old FallOuts 1&2 depicted that, with themes other games often shy away from...)
