Hey all, I'm looking to get a new gaming monitor but am getting mixed reviews regarding upgrading to 4k. Does anyone with a 4k monitor have a video of it in action so I can see if it would be worth it? I'm being advised against it due to issues with UI scaling and such. I have to imagine that's something the game can already handle, though, right? Clue me in, please, I'm really inexperienced with monitor shopping.

    I play in 4K.

Here's a screenshot I found that might give you an idea. There are no UI issues really.

The biggest issue with 4K is you'll be running all your games at 60 fps (or lower if you don't have a 1080 Ti). If you're used to 144+ fps on a high refresh rate monitor, that can be unplayable (it is for me). It's not so much an issue with ESO where the fps sucks at any resolution, but it's a tougher pill to swallow with other games (especially shooters). 1080p or 1440p (depending on your GPU) is still the sweet spot of gaming resolutions IMO.

There are UI scaling issues in other games (and Windows 10 itself). ESO doesn't seem affected.

Here is a video covering a lot of the issues with 4K gaming. I feel like we're still 1-2 GPU generations away from it making sense.

    Im running it on 2k + reshade with i7 6700k and gtx1080.

Lately i did manage to pull 60 fps most of the time but i had to reduce those particle options to minimum for that.
Even so, in trials it goes down to 40, sometimes even 30.

I pretty much tried everything so far, removing reshade, disabling ALL addons, reducing some video settings....result was exactly the same.

Do you have it locked at 60 in trials and dungeons aswell ?

Even tho it is through dsr.. yeah, running it at 4k. 0 issues with any scaling or anything (especially as you can ofcourse change the scaling yourself to).

1080ti and i7700k.. gets enough for 100-120 in most of the world .. 35-70 in cyro depending on zergfight.
I tend to play on 2k tho as it just gives me the small boost to stay steady 60 fps in cyro regardless.
While 1080p doesnt look that bad to me, i probably wouldnt switch back to it anymore after my pc upgrade

your fps drops are not from your video card but from your cpu. If you were to buy a new 7700K or 8700K and run it @5ghz all your fps drop problems would be gone in a flash

I've run the game for a long time on 4K@60hz (no drops below 60hz, just a flatline cap) and then replaced it with another monitor to run 1440p@165hz. This game is really easy on the video card thanks to the Hero engine they used.

I loved the resolution upgrade from 1080 to 1440p long ago, extremely feelable like night and day in this game. Could not go back to any lower resolution since all the textures in ESO support 1440p fully. Only a part of them however support 4K so the upgrade from 1440p to 4K is not such a big difference

I did feel the step back from 4K to 1440p because it is noticeable, but not that much really. After a while I didn't miss it anymore at all as the game looks great on 1440p (27") as well.

The upgrade in fps however is something I cannot play without anymore. The fluidity during fast paced pve-pvp parts is soooooo nice, once you get used to it you cannot go back, even if it's on a lower resolution. For this reason alone I never play on my 4K monitor anymore until 4K@144Hz version hit the market which is maybe at the end of this year if we're lucky.

After extended performance testing and bottleneck analysis I decided to cap the game at 100fps for daily play and the result is that the game hovers stable between 80 and 100fps constantly and plays superfluid in doing so.

My advice: buy 27" 1440p@120+Hz now or wait till the new ones come out and then buy one

ps: I forgot to add that I have zero issues with scaling on 4K or 1440p

Here is a video taken by me
It is demonstration of ESO in 4k + Nvidia Shaders.
You have custom scale for UI in the game settings so there are no problems at all with it.
I strongly recommend GTX 1070 or Higher if you want 60fps for ESO at 4k .
Gtx 1080 if you will use the awesome Nvidia shaders (thay are GPU taxing)

    I have an older set up. i5-4670k with a 1060 6GB card.

At 1080p my GPU use NEVER went higher than 60% during any gameplay. So I figured I would give 4k DSR a shot. I have had virtually no loss of frames and my card is at 90-100% use all the time. Visually it looks very nice and I don't need to use any anti-aliasing technique at all.

There are no UI scaling issues with this game, unlike others I have tried at 4k (LotRO, GW2 etc).

So depending on what kind of setup you have, doubling the resolution may have no impact at all on your FPS.

Interesting to know, I was looking at the 3gb version because it was a lot cheaper, but that was for 1080p gaming. Might try and stretch to the 6gb one then for 4k on ESO (don't really play much else). Also I prefer a 22inch monitor, 24 at the biggest and it's so hard to find a 4k one that small. People say you can't tell the difference at that size but they should get their eyes checked, seriously. I got a 3k 8.4 inch tablet and I can tell the difference on that size so it baffles me there isn't a better selection of smaller monitors.

dungeons are usually the best because theres only limited nr of things around you...there are various tweaks you can do, just google for it...in the user settings as well as in windows and nvidia settings....but yeah, even at 4k the game is very primary cpu heavy so either upgrade (8700 prolly best right now but gets hot i hear) or optimize things around that...

It's all a matter of how close you are to a screen.

A tablet is naturally going to be at arms length at most, so of course you can see the difference between 1080 and 2160 resolutions.

A monitor is usually viewed pretty close as well. No more than a couple of feet from your face, so it is easy to tell again.

TV in living room scenarios are meant for multiple people to view from further away, so in some cases depending on how far away you are the change from 1080 to 2160 may not even be noticeable.

I know that I am in no rush to run out and buy a 4k TV replacement for my living room given the distance from my couch to the TV wall, and the size that would be required to make 4k really worth it (not to mention the lack of true 4k content).

I run an i7 6700 with a GTX 1070 @ 4K and I run between 45 and 60 fps but that is ok I use a 40" Samsung 4k TV with HDR as a desktop monitor it only does 60Hz HDR in game mode. Picture is great without all the price of going with a high frequency PC monitor and the same surface area as 4 20" monitors.

Edit: the only issue I have is the launcher text is a bit small to read and does not scale with windows text, in-game UI is fine. If anyone knows how to re-scale the launcher text size, please share.

This topic might be the place to ask. Which cpu is better for games like ESO, with busy endgame pve in mind? Ryzen 5 or i5 (7400 or 8400). I'll probably go for a 1060 3gb graphics card along with those.
My pc is getting old so I'm looking around for what's decent.

I have run ESO in 4k for years. Looks amazing to the point I can no longer bring myself to play at a lower resolution.

    Hardware:
    i7
    32GB memory
    2x GEForce 970 in SLI
    Acer 27" 4k with GSYNC

For me, the GSYNC monitor is the glue that makes 4k at 60FPS work. The game is very smooth with a constant 60 FPS when GSYNC is running. I maintain a solid 60FPS unless in very populated zones. No issues with UI scaling at all.

*PSA - the last 2 NVIDIA GEFORCE driver releases have severely impacted my 4k performance. No matter what tweaks I make, I lost 5-20 FPS. I do NOT recommend updating your NVIDIA drivers if your prefer smooth FPS vs. possible security flaws.

It's a massive difference. When you're in areas with 100+ fps, the game is buttery smooth (you notice the difference at any frames over 60, but the higher you get, the better). The problem with ESO though is that you drop below 60 so often due to poor optimization.

But I was talking more in terms of general use. If you play any games other than ESO (especially shooters), a 120hz+ monitor is almost a must. The difference in fluidity is enormous. It feels as if you're almost viewing motion in real life on the monitor.

My pc is getting old so I'm looking around for what's decent.

I've played ESO with 3 different GPUs

    - GTX 660
    - GTX 970
    - GTX 1080

    and two different CPUs

    - i5 6600
    - R5 1600

Minimum fps in towns (around 35-40 fps) is the same on all setups. The only difference is max fps, where there is a noticeable difference (the 660 tops out at 60 fps, the 970 around 100, and the 1080 can push over 144).

Ryzen is much cheaper than Intel. Intel should in theory run this game a bit better due to better single core performance, but I haven't noticed any real difference (I overclock my Ryzen for a little extra performance).

The GTX 1060 3GB is around the same performance level as the GTX 970, so you should be more than fine at 1080p (and maybe even 1440p).

Like Nemesis, I never want to go back to 1080 either.

That's the thing, the ENTIRE game doesn't make use of the resolution. That Alyeid ruin looks pretty but Elden Root is fugly. Since I'm on Console I'm forced to play in 1080p, however Microsoft have said they'll be implementing 1440p support sometime soon now.
