Paying to dye items now!?

I’ve been an eso member for years and I have never had to pay to dye and item but now with the update I went to dye my armor and it charged 4000 gold. This is CRAZY! Is this no longer a free service?

I think it is still free if you pick no outfit instead of outfit 1. I haven't messed with it much though so not sure.

    NO.

On the Outfit Menu, there is a drop down menu.

On No Outfit, you are dyeing your equipped gear. There is no gold cost, just like there always was.

On Outfit 1, you are dyeing your outfit. There is a gold cost. This initially looks identical to your equipped gear but is in fact an outfit.

If you are being charged gold, you are dyeing an outfit. Swap to No Outfit to dye your equipped gear for free.

Technically no, you can keep dying your actual crafted armor and shields same as always. However, in reality yeah you have to pay to dye everything now because everybody who isn't a bot is using the Outfit system.

You have to pay to dye an outfit, yes. You do not have to pay to dye equipped gear, or if you are an ESO+ subscriber, it is still free to dye costumes.

Even if someone is a bot.

As Varanis said. Dying armor is still 100% free, and dying costumes is still free if you have ESO plus.
Dying an "outfit" is not free. The outfits are different from costumes. Outfits are essentially a make-your-own costume system that came with the last patch.

That being said, you can only dye your weapons through the outfit system, which is an oversight on ZOS' part.

It costs gold to dye your *outfit*. Normal gear can be dyed free of charge as usual.

The Console Outfit Dystem UI is extremely unintuitive though. Honestly kind of embarrassing imo. There was a thread warning us ahead of time but I didn’t think it could be true........

I doubt its an oversight, as such. Given that weapon styles and weapon dyes are more expensive than armor styles and dyes, I'm certain that its working as intended.

Between the "I have to PAY to dye my gear now!!" and the "I can't hide my helm anymore!!" posts, this is exactly how I feel. So much deja vu.

With the apparent exception that you can only dye weapons under "Outfit". All gear and shields are free under "No Outfit". A little annoying but the end.

There's no loss of functionality though. You couldn't dye weapons at all before the Outfit system. Now, you can only dye weapons through the Outfit system. Its a little limited, sure, but of course ZOS wasnt going to give us weapon dyeing for free when they could charge us through the outfit system.

There, I think we agree. They could have implemented it for the base game and chose instead to charge gold/crown tokens for it.
