Does it count as DoT or direct damage? Magicka DK Abilities

Hey guys,

I am not sure about 3 abilities:
- Flames of oblivion: DoT damage or direct damage? I guess DoT?
- Exhale of Draw Essence: DoT or direct damage? I guess direct damage?
- Fossilize: DoT or direct Damage? I guess direct damage?

Would be awesome if someone could clarify this - maybe even with some test results. I think this also helps other players.
And I am not too lazy to test on my own, I just don't have the time at the moment.

Thanks

Pretty sure all of those are direct damage.

The initial hit for searing strike and engulfing flames are direct damage, while the damage over time isn't.

UESP Build Editor says the same...too bad, so putting 75 points into Thaumaturge in not very beneficial for pvp...

Templars are the same way. Mix of skills with both dot/direct dmg. At least DKs can reliably proc off balance so arguably 75 in tham is better than trying to equally stack tham/master. Build dependant.

I disagree for the Dragons Bones patch. MagDKs can now achieve very high Off Balance (and thus Exploiter) uptime in PVP. 75 in Thaumaturge gives me a very strong Embers DOT, and even if that is the only DOT I use, it gives me 10% extra damage on all other skills (while still leaving enough CP to stack heavily into MaA, Ele Expert, and either spell pen or crit dmg.) Taking points out of Thaum to stack those other stars higher does not result in a 10% damage increase.

How do you achieve high off balance ? For my solo parses I feel like I never proc it.
Crown Crates are a trap. Don't fall for the gamble! Balance? What Balance? Balance, smellance.

He said for PvP. In pve the uptime is really low even at max. But on parses trap beast and whip should keep it up as much as possible.

With 75 in Thaumaturg the pretty best pvp CP split you can do is:
    75 Thaumaturge
    50 Master at arms
    55 elemental expert
    40 spell erosion
    20 elfborn

My tooltip for whip is 9957 and powerlash 11798. --> total: 21755
    Powerlash bonus of 10%: 12978 --> total: 22934

    My actual CP split:
    35 Thaumaturge
    65 Master at arms
    65 elemental expert
    45 spell erosion
    30 elfborn

My tooltip for whip is 10324 and powerlash 12232. --> total: 22556

This results in a powerlash bonus of 6% and a total lash bonus of only 1,6%.

With the second setup my proc sets hit harder (valkyn, Caluurion), but also Meteor, fossilize, deep breath, burning ambers + talons first hit, flames of oblivion...

In my opinion its not worth it.

I could take out some points of spell erosion and go for:
    75 Thaumaturge
    60 Master at arms
    60 elemental expert
    25 spell erosion
    20 elfborn
My tooltip for whip is 10177 and powerlash 12058. --> total: 22235
    Powerlash bonus of 10%: 13264 --> total: 23441

Powerlash bonus of 8% and total lash bonus of 4%.
Without losing much damage on the other abilities but we lose 1300 penetration what results in around 2% less damage and we are in the first scenario again.

The CP system only respects full percentages, your CP distribution doesn't take advantage of that.

Basically, 18.01% is the same as 18.99%.

Oh ok...I didnt read the passive correctly.
"Exploiter Increases your damage done against Off Balance enemies by 10%."
So all damage vs offset players is increased, not only my powerlash - ok, that changes my point of view.
    75 Thaumaturge
    54 Master at arms
    55 elemental expert
    33 spell erosion
    23 elfborn

    it is.

You are right, in the past it was only for critical strike damage, now only the digits before the comma count. Important information.
    75 Thaumaturge
    56 Master at arms
    56 elemental expert
    30 spell erosion
    23 elfborn

    it is.

Thanks guys, few hours on the forum and already improved my damage, thats how I like it.
