This is not the typical pay low/sell high or hit and run theft, which is inherent to game economy and a lesson for buyer beware.
This newest trends involve the creation of fake guilds that advertise on the ‘future’ attainment of a trader location, with unsuspecting members essentially giving gold to a GM, who keeps the gold and/or disbands the guild.
Or, it is individuals inside an established trader guild, acting as a go-between, promising access to or higher/lifetime membership in the guild, but pocketing that gold personally.
Reputable trader guilds are well organized and run, with leadership in place to obtain locations and manage the dues that fund those location, events and activities.
As such, here are a few guidelines to help players avoid being scammed:
* Don’t join guilds that promise a top spot the first week. For better or worse, the market is held by established trader guilds. It takes time, effort and lots of gold to break into a high traffic area. New guilds may have to work up to that level.
* If the guild gm is a new tag, or has a low gamer score, there's a good chance it's a scam guild, focused on gaining as many new members on the promise of a trader, while holding that gold if and when it ‘fails’.
* Related to this trend, is the creation of fake guilds that are similar in name to an established one, selling potential members on a non-existent relationship. While many guild have set up ‘sister’ guilds as an expansion method, these are documented (in MOTD or ‘about us’) or in legitimate recruitment posts.
* Established traders do not require a finder fee, or allow recruiters to take gold to secure players a spot inside a guild. Once in a guild, it possible to pay for VIP/Bank access/Lifetime status. Do so within the system, speaking directly to GM or officers, and depositing directly into a guild bank.
* Document! If you are talking to a recruiter on xbox messages, whispers, zone/area chat, fb or forum, take a screen shot of that conversation.
* If you buy in area chat, take a video clip of the transaction and any messages, in case the seller is being shifty (removing gold/substituting items/running off).
* Contact a GM or officer/FB sites/Forums with said evidence. This helps spread the word and keep others from falling victim to theft or fraud.
* Most scammers can be exposed and dealt with, but proof is necessary, to avoid naming and shaming without solid proof.
* Know that not every sale is a scam. People sell low, because they are unfamiliar with the market or want to make gold quickly. People sell high because they can and the market allows it.
The economy in Tamriel is consistently shifting and adjusting. Being aware and cautious is important for both sellers and buyers..The more you know...the more rewarding and less frustrating the experience will be.
