Insane FPS drops all the sudden

I posted this in the PC help section but I know this section gets a bit more traffic.

I start around 50+. After a minute it drops to in the 20’s. This is an issue effecting me over the last week or two. I have:

-Turned off all add ons
-set priority of the game to high in task manager
-reduced number of applications running to where nothing should be bogging down the CPU
-deletes user settings and let game remake them
-changing graphics to low in game doesn’t change anything
-reloading UI fixes it for a minute then back to crap
-firewall isn’t interrupting anything
-game is using NVIDIA card not *** onboard card
-graphics driver is a few back but has worked perfectly fine up until the last week or so
-not sure why virus program would screw with FPS as it has an exception for it but I disabled it anyways
-I tried running 64 bit client directly from client folder as admin

I’m sure I’ve tried a few other things I can’t remember but none of this worked...

I also ran benchmark programs and they all showed computer is running where it should be, slightly higher actually.

My computer certainly isn’t new but it was good when the game can out no reason it shouldn’t be able to run it just as good. Specs are

GTX 680M
Intel i7-3630qm all cores Unparked
8GB RAM
Plenty of hard drive space
Windows 7 64 bit

Whatever is causing this FPS is making the game impossible to play for me and I’m at my wits end. Anyone have a similar issue and found a solution?

I think this past week everyone has been having issues. only thing I can think of is they are preparing servers for next patch or servers are finally dying XD

Either way do this in usersettings with the game closed

SET MaxCoresToUse "8" the 8 was a 6 just change that and it should help a little bit

FPS drops, insane lag spikes, and the game crashing. Been going on for me for over a month. I've tried everything, nada.

i do know one thing, if this persists I’m going to have to find another game and I’m not happy about that because I like ESO and have been playing since the beginning...

I’m also going to try a repair and see what that does tomorrow.

I don't mean to whinge but it has gotten really bad on the PS4 for me. If they can't clear it up with the next DLC patch, I might take some time off til they do. It's too frustrating.

Interesting, since a few days I'm seeing sudden drops / freezes that last less than a second but are noticeable. Not terrible often, but annoying and didn't happen before. I still have to check some things, though.

GTX 1060, I5-7500, 8GB RAM. Haven't updated Windows 10 in months. I did update nvidia driver a few days ago.

Ps4 just likes to kick me off line whenever it feels like it. And there are times it is quite frequent. And it has been pretty bad the past few weeks.

theyve done something to the optimization recently . i tested this at home and at a gaming cafe to see if the findings were consistent and they were:
    - the at rest pings and fps are better- from where i am in the world i would average around 280-320- and an FPS of 60. the at rest specs the past week have now been about 240 and 75- in low pop zones or in pvp- with noone around, or at the beginning of a trial- in the gathering areas.
    - the moment i have entered into high pop zones- trial combat or bascially anyting- the pings have plummetted to 999+ and 1 fps. the game has been literally un[playable for me now for 2 days. its very very frustrating. as i ve said- ive tested several setups and several locations, and its not my end. other games perform well.
    - certain zones and instances are just plain leaky- the rakkhat instance- last stage vMOL? is a buggy mess. my guild and i all got crashes- SIX in a row. we were advised for us all to turn off our sound- we still had crashes but eventually got thru it. apparently this bug has been around since launch. someone joked that we had to turn off our video as well. if only it werent true itd be funny.
    - my conclusion ...well im not in tech- but all i know is- nothings playing. as a working adult- in an adult guild, my free time is sparse and i plan alot of my free time around my guilds raids, and not being able to participate- slows everyones time- and wastes literally time and money. need i remind everyone that most of us pay a subsciption that equals that of netflix.
    - submitted countless tickets and help requests. my last resort is to make a video shaming the game and company-
but i dont want to do that either- i just want the game i enjoy to work as it did when i first played it a year and half ago- on a lesser machine - with a lesser internet connection. ive incrementally improved my rig to improve my experience and yet the performance oif their servers has conisstnently deteriorated. frustrated and witing for a new game to come out.

I'm also getting drops the past few days. After an hour or 2 of playing, I'm dropping from 70 to like 5 fps and then back up again. And sometimes down to 1 fps or less and then it shoots back up, every 5 or 10 sec

The more you play the more RAM gets eaten by the game process which affects your fps and in the end leads to a crash or youre forced to restart because the performance pure crap. It is also well known that there have been and probably still are memory leaks. Some zones have really bad optimization and while travelling you may have fps spiking between 100 and 15 fps. The only advice I can give its to get more RAM though doing this will only delay the crashes and the fps drop meaning the issue will stay unsolved.

Have you got Shissu installed? If so try removing it. Is what worked for me. Disabling was not enough :( I was at 60+fps (capped to monitor speed on purpose) but dolmens/areas with lots of people were causing brief in combat drops to well <10fps

Did not cure vMA though :(

You can also try a new ESO profile with no add ons at all and if that doesn't work put the old one back. i was shocked how fast a zone was without any add ons installed. i *think* the game must still load disabled addons, just not activate them :(

is it noticably worse when lightning effects go off rather than fire/ice?

    @deepseamk20b14_ESO What's your settings in-game?

    Windowed fullscreen

    1920x1080

    G sync off

    Anti aliasing off

Texture quality and sub sampling is set to high.

    Shadows set to low

    Water reflection set to off

    View distance 50

    Particle I think 1150?

I can’t remember the last slider if there is one

All other things set to off

Just a week or two ago I had bloom, grass, and sun rays set to on with a reshader on and was hitting 60 to 75 FPS.

Even turning all that off FPS doesn’t go up.

I had shissus a long time ago but it’s been unchecked and off in my add ons list for months.

Everything profile wise in windows eg. power plan is set to performance.

NVIDIA experience won’t find any of my games so I can’t adjust anything there and as far as I know NVIDIA got rid of the old way of right clicking on desktop and changing settings there so I don’t have that ability.

Ive been having the same problem the last week or so on PC NA. I use to consistently stay above 50 FPS even in heavy graphic situations. Now i will randomly drop from 80-100 dps to 10-30 dps for a few seconds. Then it will jump back up. I know its nothing to do with a heavy graphics load as i get it when im in houses alone with the residents, open world, and dungeons. It really messes me up on my picks, stabs, and trespassing. Probably got a good 15-20k bounty from it happening at the wrong moment.

The big thing for me is once it drops it generally stays like that for a while, it doesn’t just drop for a second or two. When I was in clockwork city last night I went from 65 to 24 and it just stayed there. Occasionally it would go up to 34-36 but drop back down.

@deepseamk20b14_ESO I also had performance issues the last weeks but they are caused by a memory leak from a Windows update. My forum post however got this answer which might also be a possible cause for your problem as you are using a GTX 680M (which I think is a bit older).
    also one more thing.

My brother had serious issues with ESO midweek. Some big Windows update also updated/messed with his NVIDIA graphic card drivers. This made ESO crash every few minutes. Took him a while to uninstall and reinstall his original drivers. He is using an older nvidia card where newer drivers do not work well with ESO.

as your machine is new I suppose ESO wont crash on you, but changed drivers (and eventually not correctly installed ones) can decrease your performance...

So what should I do? Keep my old NVIDIA driver that was working prior to the windows update I just got, or update the NVIDIA driver to work with the new windows drivers? Or reroll windows drivers (I don’t know how to do this) but can look it up.

I personally think its a server side issue. I run windows 7 pro on an i7 with a GTX 650 and i dont update windows nor nvidia drivers unless its absolutely necessary for me to do something( i found MS updates often tend to cause more problems than they solve). So my system hasnt changed in weeks at least. Also there are people getting these issues on PS4 and Xbox if i read correctly.

Maybe it’s just plain old bad performance on ZoS’s end. Hope it’s fixed with dragon bones...
