So I was doing a quest and an NPC mage joins me and I am like, "Cool its some minor backup. We shall work together to take down this foe." Then the funniest thing happens. The mage starts healing the enemy we are supposed to kill. This isn't the first time this happened too.

Here are the screenshots:

There's a spot in Reapers March where this happens, and it's infuriating. Less so now that the game is so much easier, but back in the day, it made for a rough 2-on-1 that made no sense being a 2-on1.

My friends who play DnD say to always kill all the healers and mages!

Sometimes I get a glitch where the little beam of light from my rapid regen shoots to someone who isn't actually getting a heal. Maybe something like that happened?

Huh. I'm used to my NPC companions being useless (Lyris Titanborn, looking at you), but I'm not used to them outright turning against me.

Well...except for that one time in Skyrim when I accidentally killed Lydia and a necromancer raised her against me and she killed me with the Blade of Woe. I may have deserved that one.

Too many times hearing "Oh look! It's a cave!" and she accidentally fell onto your sword you were holding at the time?

Maybe...or maybe she just got in my way. I told her to quit blocking the doorway and she wouldn't move!

It only looks like it's healing it. It's actually hurting it. That ability that looks the same as the heal for NPCs is called Radiant Oppression. Templars have the same ability and it's a murder over time spell.

Ah okay, I know that skill for Templar just didn't know that the NPC had one that looked this way. Cause my Radiant Oppression is one straight line beam with extra lines on the side using a sort of spherical linear interpolation. Also my hand is still while the NPC's hand moves in a circular motion, same as their heal.

With their heal and attack having identical appearances it can be confusing. Thanks for clearing it up!

Haven't personally encountered this bug so can't confirm but I've never seen npcs use Jesus Beam and judging by the screenshots that's the heal indeed, not Radiant. Radiant is 100% linear whereas the heal-y beam kinda wavers around some, also Radiant should make the character stand in rather specific forward-leaning position whereas npc heal beam is just moving their hand in the air...also the shiny of the beam itself looks a bit different. Of course I can't confirm that 100% without seeing it, can you personally confirm that beam was hurting enemies instead of healing them?

Also lol, that's one funny bug. ...I say let it be, make it appear like npcs actually have some freedom of choice and today they chose to NOT join you :D

The one with the slavers, right? I remember that one. And completely agree, SO nonsensical. :( I could kind of see it if you killed him first, and she turned on you afterwards to keep the whole operation from being reported, but that wasn't what happened and there was no dialog to support what was going on.

Yes. First time I saw it I even stopped attacking to see whether it was doing anything and it was harming the target. NPCs do the same attack to you. Sometimes an ENEMY healer will hit you with an identical beam and it's a damaging ability as well. The animation is the same for both heal and damage mode because it's the same skill being used with different target effect code. This is a common thing for devs to do in RPGs as it spares having to assign the target an extra ability since they can use the same one for multiple cases. If the ability comes up in the rotation and a nearby target is low health, it's a heal beam against that friendly. If it comes up and there's no one in need of healing, it's a damage beam against an enemy.
