Reducing Bounty Question - Dark Brotherhood Passive

How exactly does the Dark Brotherhood passive Scales of Pitiless Justice work? Does it reduce an existing bounty for murders that have already taken place or does it only reduce new bounty for future murders after the passive has been purchased with skill points or maxed out? I have a character with a very high bounty in the millions from murdering, and I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort to level up my Dark Brotherhood skill line to get this passive so I ultimately have less to pay off or if the damage is already done.

It should retroactively change the amount of time, and what you owe I believe.

Hit reduces the bounty you would get from committing the offenses listed and getting caught

Thrives guild swiftly forgotten is probably a better passive. IMO.

It changes the bounty for new murders, but that your bounty will decay at the new rate as you gain the passives (though I don't remember if the bounty decay passive is TG or DB).

Can't you use a counterfeit pardon edict and wipe it all out? I've only used one twice and my bounties were pretty low each time.

Edit: just read they only remove 500 gold at a time, so nevermind...

If the bounty is in the millions, that's a lot of counterfeit pardons at 500 gold each. Even the Leniency Edicts only get rid of 2000 gold each. The Grand Amnesty reward from the end of the Thieves Guild is 100k.

Still, every little bit helps, I suppose.

I am pretty sure it only reduces bounties incurred after you take the skill. Not 100% sure mind you, as it has been awhile, but I recall that being how it worked on one of my characters that had a bounty before taking the skill.

I agree with the poster that recommended the Swiftly Forgotten passive instead. At least that way you can have the bounty continually dropping during your play time (provided you can keep from getting caught). That said, if you plan on continuing your homicidal lifestyle, both passives would probably be worth levelling.

It will only reduce the bounties on seen murders after you have invested in the passive, it does not work retroactively.

Investing in Swiftly Forgotten is about the only way to resolve this, then parking the alt out in the woods somewhere and loading them up after a period of time. Since it is millions, figure on a few weeks, but check ever several days.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

It might be time to move to a place with no justice system, like Coldharbour or Cyrodiil.

Mixing the DB with Thieves Bounty reduction passives is the way to go.

It's a bit of grinding to get them both maxed, but worth it.

If I get a fairly massive Bounty, I find I don't have to wait long at all before it bleeds itself out.
