What gear and set up to use for tank with highest max health and resistance?

Hey folks – I wanted to do a little research for purpose of building a tank with a very high health battery and excellent resistance. I figured I would post up here first before going to Alcast.

My primary objective is aiming for the highest amount of Max Health possible and secondary objective is trying to come very close to or hitting that maximum physical resistance and spell resistance for damage mitigation.

What suggestions would you make for gear? I am looking to use two different five-piece sets and a monster helm and shoulders set.

What traits do you suggest? I would likely use Glyphs that promote Max Health and Health Recovery (maybe Tri-Stat down the line if I can ever afford it).

What race do you suggest? Nord, Imperial, Redguard, Argonian seem to be popular choices for tanks.

Is there any Mundus stone aside from The Lord (Max Health) you would suggest?

Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you want pure health just do Plague Doctor/ebon or PD/GreenPact. PD/Ebon is alot less selfish. Might chudan as monster set.

What is the end purpose of the build? Helps in general plus going for max resist seems more odd PvP.

The top tanks in the game are not gearing for max resist though there is one setup that offers max spell resist but not physical. They tend to gear for other aspects instead such as sets that help the group such as ebon.

I mean if your goal is to maximize both health and resist, then a combo of plague doctor (health) and fortified brass (Resistances) would probably be your best bet. What is the purpose of this build? Tanking PVE or PVP?

From a PVE standpoint at least, that sounds like a pretty terrible tank. No group support and your stats would almost certainly be overkill. Simply put, you dont need the resistances. You are better off focusing on your block cost (jewelry glyphs and CP) as a tank for the purposes of staying alive. For a health set, Ebon>Plague doctor because it helps your group, and literally any group support set is going to be better than fortified brass.

Also, in PVE, most tanks actually dont run a 2 piece monster set unless its for a specific situation. They go with two 1 piece monster pieces, double magic recovery (chokethorn/shadowrend) is the most common.

If you are looking for a good tanking resource, I actually wouldnt go to Alcast. Nothing against him, it's just not his focus. Check out Woeler's page.

And also perhaps have a look at this guide from @paulsimonps on damage mitigation.

This build will primarily be for PVE, running Veteran dungeons and having the ability stay alive on top bosses and maintain agro. I'm only CP 365 right now, so I'm working on gaining EXP to max out my CP. At some point I would like to run trials, but I am a few ways down the road from that. I do note that I occasionally dabble in Cyrodil, but PVP is not the focus on this build.

I wanted to know if I should refine some of my armor from purple to yellow, but I didn't want to make that move just yet until I was a bit more settled into the gear I would be running. That was another purpose of me asking up for general advice on here. I've been playing for only about 3 months, so still a fair amount of learning to do.

I have been running with Green Pact and Plague Doctor lately, noting that I also have full set of Ebon Armory and Warrior Poet set. Anyone have thoughts on the Warrior Poet set?

The responses so far have been helpful. Woeler's guide is more in-depth on this particular build. And the Forums link explaining Mitigation has me second guessing how much I really want to focus on that. I don't have the Mighty Chudan helm yet which I had been kicking myself about because of failed attempts to complete Ruins of Mazzatuin on Vet mode, but now I am wondering if I really need it.

Thank you for the continued replies.

My go to tank setup for 4-man content is 5 Ebon/5 Torugs pact/1shadow/1Chokethorn. It will handle any piece of 4-man content in the game. Torugs might not look like a tank setup at first glance, but it has a lot of good things going for it. First it is craftable, so getting weapons/shields in the right trait is easy. While the spell damage is blah for a tank, the health and spell resist is nice. The real reason you run this is that when you combine the 5th piece bonus with infused weapons and a crusher glyph, you give your group a lot of physical/spell penetration with a very high uptime.

Essentially, this gear combo does three things. 1. It gives you and your group plenty of health, allowing you to survive and your DPS to focus more on damage. 2. It is a big increase in DPS for your group due to the penetration. That also means you dont have to survive as long if things die faster. 3. The double magic recovery allows you to spam ingneous shields and chains (assuming you are a DK), giving you stamina while blocking, excellent crowd control, and extra survival.

Also, in terms of race, you can't beat an Argonian for straight tanking. The potion passive is insanely strong for tanks. I would give second place to imperial. Redgaurd is a reasonable choice if you also want to DPS on that character. As your race on a tank is not nearly as important as it is for a damage dealer, there are a lot of people that suggest you should min/max your tank to a DPS race, and its hard to argue with that logic. Nords are the most garbage race in the game unless all you like to do is RP drinking games with skyrim fanboys.

Good stats for veteran dungeons is maybe 30k health (with food), 25k spell resist and 20k physical resist (unbuffed). If you have these stats, use group utility sets that buff your group making the dungeons go much faster.
