Templar single target abilities and Ancient Knowledge

Hey all,

I was weighing the advantages and disadvantages of using a flame staff over a lightning staff. I noticed that as far as my single target abilities go, the 8% dmg buff from using a flame staff only seems to work properly with Vampire's Bane (morph of Sun Fire). Radiant Oppression doesn't appear to gain any damage from this passive and Purifying Light only gains damage on the initial small bit of damage, not the whole spell. If this is the case, then it makes a lightning staff far better for single target dmg due to how many of my AoE abilities that the lightning buff DOES improve.

Is this working as intended or is it broken?

You have 2 weapons for a reason though. Put a Lightning Staff on one bar with all of your AoE abilities. Put a Fire Staff on the other bar with all of your single target abilities.

Against trash mobs you just stay on your lightning bar generally, cast your AoE and then heavy attack.

For bosses you cast all your AoE at the boss, then switch and cast your single target abilities. Repeat.

Virtually every magicka build out there has an exact 8 second rotation (the duration of Elemental Blockade) in which all abilities are cast.

Yes. It is indeed broken if it isn't actually increasing it. Now, I'm not too clued in on templar PvE, but this might be the scaling issues people had complained about, or maybe not.

How did you test it? Because in practical use 8% is less than that because of how diminishing returns on the calculation works. In any case, fire is still better for single target because of the much stronger blockade (damage on burning is extra) and weaves, both getting higher damage from things like DK breath, and more if dunmer.

It is working as intended, at least mostly.

You are suggesting the lightning staff buffs AoEs so it is better for single target damage does not add up. While I have not tested RO itself, what I have tested has found single target damage is buffed by fire staff and lightning buffs AoE as you seem to agree.

What you use on each bar depends on the build and how you use it.

My healplar wants a resto staff on one bar of course. Her destro staff is lightning for 2 reasons:
    1. Blockade off balance.
    2. Puncturing Sweeps is an AoE ability.
PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

Even when I switch bars, all my AoE spells continue ticking. My spamable ability is also an AoE and benefits from the lightning staff buff (Puncturing Sweeps). Therefore, all I really benefit from using a fire staff is a little more dmg on Vampire's Bane, but a loss of dps from all my AoE attacks that are active (blockade, blazing spear, ritual of retribution, puncturing sweeps). Of the other abilties I use (Radiant Oppression, Purifying Light, Vampire's Bane) only Vamp Bane sees any real benefit from a fire staff. Fire staff does offer damage from burning and the blockade bonus but lightning offers off balance (which I get an additional 10% dmg from due to the Exploiter perk from champion points). I have tested extensively and have found that I always appear to gain slightly higher dps from using a lightning staff on both bars.

All other abilities show an increase on the spell tooltip based on the type of staff equiped, including flame staff giving a bonus to Soul Assault (which is a similar ability to Radiant Oppression). I also do not see any increase on the real damage caused to targets when using the flame staff on the abilities I mentioned.

I'm fairly confident that it doesn't give a damage bonus to those single target abilities. My question is why? Broken or for a good reason? And, if it is broken, do ZOS know about it and are they planning on fixing it or should I post in the bugs section?

Only vampire's bane gets improvement. Sweep and blocade get increased dmg so single target dmg can be higher on lightning bar for his setup. So it adds up.
