Physical damage and Magic damage are, effectively, elemental damage types, so far as ESO is concerned. There's nine elemental damage types in ESO (Physical, Disease, Poison (not to be confused with damage caused by alchemical poisons), Fire, Lightning, Ice, Cold (yes, there's two different cold damage types), Magic, and Oblivion (which cannot be mitigated by any means.))
War Maidens only affects Magic damage (so, most Nightblade abilities, some Warden Abilities, all Vampire abilities, Dark Magic abilities for sorcs, and a mix of other abilities scattered through the game.)
Automaton affects Physical damage, (so, some Warden abilities, most stamina weapon abilities, bleed effects, and so on.)
Now, there is a kind of informal categorization. Physical, Disease, and Poison are usually lumped together as Stamina based, while the others are Magicka based (though, this isn't completely true, because there are situations where you'll find Stam abilities that deal Magic damage (particularly from NB morphs).
Incidentally, if you are dealing Magic damage with an ability that scales with Weapon Power and Stamina, War Maidens won't do anything for you at all. It'll still boost your spell damage, but that's it.
Now, what War Maiden does do is completely negate the value of Vampire Lord. It already affects the three abilities VL does, while still being viable in a wider range of builds.5 -

It is first and foremost a set for magicka Templar DDs, the two of them left across all servers.0 -

✭✭✭✭✭ZOS needs to get better goodies with the vendor. This particular haul wasn’t too bad, but let’s see more: Velidreth, Skoria, Blood Spawn, Grothdarr, etc. for the monster sets.
