That would be handy.. I don't even know the number of times I've stolen the battle axe at the Vvardenfell writ turn in place or taken some armour off the table in front of one of the Windhelm trader guild stall merchants.

This Khajiit does not think that M'aiq would ever have such a thought! Those sort of thoughts are only perhaps for elves.

Why would you not ever not wish to claim ownership of an unwatched and therefore obviously unwanted object?

It is just practical recycling yes.

Perhaps the guards need a little training to understand the difference between a hungry kitten borrowing an apple and other things which are also not crimes but that the city authorities seem to dislike for some reason.

Combine this with the other thread with people who want a “justice” system where they can murder you for picking up an apple. I guess PvP against motivated opponents interested in and geared for it was too much for them?

    practical recycling. i like it.

the reason the game doesnt need this is you dont accidentally flog stuff while casting aoe. If you cant handle your cursor, youve had too much skooma. As has been previously pointed out as well, aim higher. looking at the ground instead of where you are going, you deserve what you get. even if its just a plain old staff.

I do writs on 14 chatacters each day, and at least once per day I accidentally pick something up while trying to turn them in.

Seems like a ZOS troll move to put so many “owned” items around the writ turn in area.

I thought under auto loot there was an option to not steal. I use that and it at least puts a step in between to make sure I never steal something without a warning first

I have no idea how many times I've accidentally stolen a display item whenever I run up to a guild trader.

i do 6 toons per day every day and i havent picked up anything accidently in months. if you do this daily, you have issues with coordination, or where you point your mouse cursor. in fact, you probably arent even looking at where you are aiming before clicking. thats wholly your own fault and the only thing required to fix that is for you to change how you target and click things. there is no reason to change the game.

Meh not really a change to the game, just a toggle in the options like killing innocents. Same argument could be said for that too "just aim better" but ZOS thought enough to have an option to turn that off, no reason not to for this as well.

If targetting in this game was worth a ***, you'd be onto something there.

Huge difference between something that happens to be line of sight but uninteractable due to distance, and an intentional interaction. I've tagged the master chest in Wayrest on more than one occasion because the banker decided to shift - all while in front of the chairs, which are in front of the desk. We'll disregard the fact that it's also 5 ft+ below me on the floor.

I'm sure many have also dealt the killing blow to some mouse or frog instead of the raged out monster the size of a dumptruck right in front of their crosshairs.

If intelligent, intuitive targeting were a thing in this game, tab-target wouldn't even be required.

EDIT: A monumentally simple programming 'fix' for this would simply require you to press-and-hold for a short time frame to advocate the intended theft, vice a single misclick. Given the heavy attack bug, it probably wouldn't completely eliminate the issue, but it would likely reduce it considerably.

Sometimes I think that devs place things near NPCs just so, only because they want me to steal them accidentally. I endorse the idea of a new togglable option for preventing such undesirable situations.

Is that the same thread where the PVE thieves are crying that the PVE murderers are stealing their mobs? And that something must be done! Because I guess the PVErs can’t handle that people might play their special snowflake game differently then they themselves play it?

The setting is for Auto-Looting of stolen items. One option automatically takes stolen items when opening a container. The other option allows you to peek inside without taking the items. It does not prevent stealing of items outside of containers.

The addon is a must-have in my opinion. Hopefully they put that setting in-game some day.

Are you on PC? Check out the addon "No Accidental Stealing", been using it for many months now. You can configure it to prevent stealing except when you crouch, or simultaneously press a configurable "allow stealing" key.

Agree. At least a couple times a week I unintentionally steal from the crafting writ drop off or a merchant and either have sneak around or use an edict when I have other things to do and just don't have the time to sneak. Sometimes I just destroy the item and walk right up to guard to clear my bounty if I'm really frustrated.
I don't comment here often but when I do, I get [snip]

That only works with containers. I actually like that as I can "browse" without actually taking anything. Open a drawer, find a lockpick, move on to the next cabinet. Find a blue or purple item, stealth and then "retrieve" it. Makes clearing rooms a LOT faster. Does nothing for the odd object placed on a table though. There's no prompt for that.

I almost got nailed a few times during the last holiday event where you had to dance in the inns. Forget which one, but as soon as you zoned in, your mouse was auto-targeted to steal an item on the table by the door. Pretty bad when you're just entering an inn and hitting "E" to start dancing and end up stealing someone's lunch.

There is no addon or feature currently for us console players for preventing accidental "stealing" as of this comment of mine right now. Would love it if this was fixed and add an option for us console players for just in case.

What happened to M'aiq's eyes?!?! :o
But yes, I've wanted this feature ever since I tried to click on a banker in Vivec City, and ended up accidentally "stealing" 19 gold they had sitting next to them. It's like the developers put that there on purpose just for laughs. Meanwhile, my poor traumatized templar healer had to stand away from the crowd for a while until her bounty went away. Luckily there wasn't a guard right nearby.

Sadly, as others have mentioned, this is only for items inside containers. Items that are sitting on desks or propped up against the writ turn in boxes will be stolen without a prompt.
