Couple really weird things with my Destruction Staff

This may be a common thing everyone knows about, or it may be a very strange thing and I'm the only person experiencing it. Basically, I run around with a Destruction Staff the majority of the time. About 80% of the time when I go to loot a body/open a door/pick a chest/grab a node there's no interaction button. I typically have to swap to my other bar, then instantly I can interact with things again. It's not a big deal, just seems incredibly odd. Again, this may be well known.

Another kinda weird thing I've noticed is I like to use Blockade of Storms followed by Flame lash for that bonus damage/heal. Usually I'm not limited in the amount of lashes or other skills I can blast enemies with, but every once in a while it will let me do a couple lashes, then suddenly I can't use any skills. I can press down the button, and it even shows on the screen I'm selecting an ability, but my avatar just stands there dumbfounded. Is there an occasional limit when using that combo or something that I'm missing? Note that in these instances I have plenty of resources to use more skills, I am just incapable for some reason.
