Noob Poisons Question

It seems like poisons are ... not the best option for damage right now, but I did have a couple questions if someone was able to help me out.
If you poison your bow on backbar and it procs off a light attack when you set DoTs does the poison stay when you switch to your front bar?
For instance, I have been playing a stamsorc so when I set say... endless hail with a bow that had a damage health poison attached and then switch to DW front bar would the poison stay active or would it cancel the effect? Would this mean that it has a higher net damage than a simple enchant on a bow back bar?
Mainly wondering because it seems like having that additional DoT would add a lot of DPS. I'm mainly focused on PvE right now if that makes a difference.
