Why gold use for Outfit system, instead of style materials?

Gold sinks are important for a healthy MMO economy.

This game is far from a healthy economy, you do realize there are billions of exploited currency in game still

Keep gold cost and add style material cost.

    You're not making actual armor.

If it used style materials, I’d have to spend gold on the rarer items anyway.

I’m already making my characters CP160 sets in their basic race style and just using costumes.

It does not make sense in many levels. Logic, convenience, players interaction and even ZOS profits.

Logic: Who is an acceptor of our gold? There is some minor daedra in every outfit station that hungers for our gold?
Convenience: gold is not account-wide, while style materials are (at least with crafting bag).
Players interaction: style materials will be trash after this update. No profit for traders from them. No need to grind them, less grouping, etc.
ZOS profits: Hmmm.... Crown Mimic Stones? Who will need them at all for the Mephala's sake?

Maybe there are even more arguments for style materials use instead of gold.

Here is what I think the reasons are:

    1. They want to separate Crafting from Cosmetics by not reusing style material and Mimic Stones.
    2. Splitting Crown currency between crafting and cosmetics prevents one from being used for both. Players have to spend Crown on both, making efficient use of Crowns more difficult.
    3. They need a gold sink for players with lots of gold.
    4. Players with crafting bags have tons of style stones, which will keep them away from the Crown Store tokens, and they won't need to spend any gold. It is safe to say that a lot of ESO Plus players would never have to worry about "paying" for outfits.
    5. Players short on Style Material will be able to buy from other players for less than what the current gold sink is. Also, the need to buy from other players is a blocker for some.

They want this available for everyone. Not everyone does an activity that leads to them having crafting material and style stones. Almost anything you do in the game will net you at least some gold.

Considering how it should work, it shouldn’t cost materials at all.

I don’t fully agree that gold per slot makes sense but gold and crowns for access to additional sets makes sense.

Im borderlined on that idea. Sure, style materials will make this cheaper and seems the most logical way of going about this, but others have already stated that this would help in having another gold sink, which this game needs.

In some cases, it would make it significantly more expensive. I'm thinking specifically of the Crown Store Motifs and Ebony here. At the cheep end, stuff like the basic racial motifs are more expensive (though the costs are still pretty negligible), but there are style stones in the game that sell for over 10k a piece. Night Pumice usually goes for around 3k a piece, and at those prices the only thing cheaper to craft are the 2h weapons (including Staves and bows), while Stahlrim Shards and Grindstones can go for more than 10k per, while costing less in the outfit system than the Ebony motif.

I'm already spending a ton of gold... And now this, I honestly thought it would cost style mats. It makes sense, especially with how effectively our gold is sunk now.

Also, and I might have this wrong... But it appeared the first dye change to armor was free but the second dye to armor (not costume) cost 4000+ gold! Just to change a color? So now dying gear and costumes costs gold... Something that has been free since launch. That's not right at all, it should cost nothing to continue dying anything willy nilly as it has been.

Other than the above gripe I like the system. I will enjoy it... But it will break me gold wise.

Why don't they just have it where you can spend gold OR the material? This would be ideal, as you could use gold for the super-expensive styles and mats for everything else.

Unfortunately it seems like Zenimax is determined to screw us all over every chance they get. Why the hell else would they be going for the single worst payment system they could think of that completely invalidates dozens of items in one stroke?

Should keep prices as is but allow you to spend style materials kind of like tempers so each style mat reduces price by 10% so to make a certain item be "free" you need to spend 10 style materials. Or add special items that can drop from various sources that work as costume tempers.

Looking at the PTS I do think that some of the costing should come down.

A thousand to a couple of thousand gold to change a complete look should be ok.

Also while I am at it. If I want more that one outfit slot I've got a pay for it I do not mind....but it should be account wide, not for individual toons.

We are not crafting the appearance when placing items in the new system so materials as OP suggests would not make sense or be logical. The items are already "crafted".

It does make sense gold is used since the game really does not have much in gold sinks and it is the common way I have seen similar systems done in other games.

Some of OP's logic seems a little odd. That Gold is not account wide when it is actually shared account wide via the extremely simple task of depositing it in the bank and then withdrawing it on a different character just as we do with so much stuff bound to account. I could go on but I think this point really sums things up.
