What is a Parse? How do you do them?

So I'm a Co-Leader to a trails, dungeon, PvE guild. I started baby steps into trials and have realized how important it is to make sure the DPS hit specific numbers(Damage) to comfortably reach the goal of the trial. So, what is a Parse? How do you do them? I myself run a Tank, Heals. Starting to try out DPS to make sure I understand my teammates POV when I runt he trails and dungeons.

A parse is just a DPS test to analyze ones rotation, gear set, ability etc...

So, go to someones house that has a 3mil health target dummy. The DPS should attack the dummy by going through their skill rotation that they would use on a boss during a trial, until the target dummy is dead.

After the target dummy dies, it posts the DPS result in the text chat box for that person to see.

Magicka classes use Ele Drain for sustain and the resistance debuff on the dummy, stam use either their own form of major fracture or can have someone use puncture on the dummy to apply major fracture for them.

    Simple as that really.

    EDIT:
A raid parse will require your full 12man group and a Robust Centurion Dummy (52mil health). This parse should be all the dps doing their rotations while the healers and tanks are applying their group buffs as well as the boss debuffs.

In addition, if you want a lot more information on your DPS parse use an addon such as Combat Metrics.

You cant see individual group members damage numbers in Combat Metrics. You can see your own DPS, the total Group DPS, and various up times of your groups buffs and debuffs. It also shows your percent of DPS. Good rule of thumb is that a DPS should pull about 12% of group damage. This of course does depend on group, for example, you might except stamina players to pull 14-15% and ranged dealers to pull closer to 10%, but every group will be different.

There are a few addons that allow for group damage sharing, but they need to be installed by everyone in your raid and set to share. We used to be able to spy on other players individual numbers with certain addons, but people got really upset about it. So now it must be done voluntarily.

If you are really trying to get a raid together and progress, my advice is to encourage/require people to post their own DPS numbers in chat after each boss fight. It can turn into a bit of a pissing contest, and certainly can cause some issues, but it really is the best way to help your players improve. The bigger dummies are great for this, as you should be able to simulate a perfect raid scenario with buffs and Debuffs. It will give you an idea of what your ceiling is for your group, just dont expect to see those numbers in a real fight.
