Did ESO have it's best year?

Does anyone else feel like this was ESO's biggest sales/growth year (2017)? 2015 was big as well but I feel like they might have recently just hit a massive milestone in the MMO world.

Nah it will be the year they add the necromancer class with a new chapter..... the Hype is unreal for it.... the moment it officially gets revealed the forums will catch on fire....

seriously warden was like.... what ? why ? who asked for it... when it got released... the real Hype came from the Morrowind Stuff that outside of Nostalgy was pretty Lacklustre...

I have no clue how they did sales/numbers-wise.

I can tell you, from my perspective, that this was an excellent year in terms of story and worldbuilding and a rotten year in terms of enjoyable gameplay/combat.

Last year was definitely bigger, Improved game-play for most of the year after what amounted to a re-launch of the game with consoles and FTP all finishing up with one tamriel which made grouping work well. This year.... step in it with morrowind making a mess of combat causing raids to mostly dry up, ticking folks off with $40 sticker, and loosing a lot of important players who had amounted to unpaid highly effective PR guys. Follow that up with a doldrums of a summer and some awful steam players per day numbers, and get less returning players with clockwork than the similarly timed Wrothgar had gotten. Not a great year though the mystery box crown store drop event got some play twords the end. Really, I expect ZOS was less than pleased with 2017. As for me... I was subbed most of last year and unsubbed most of this without buying Morrowind either. Amount paid since Morrowind $0. Hoping for a better 2018.
I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

This was the first year of ESO for me where I didn't actually play for half/most of it and that was by choice. My personal favourite was patch 1.5 when they introduced Undaunted...good old times when everyone was running dungeons like crazy and it was actually no small deal to complete them. Now...I mostly feel like it's no longer the game I used to like. There're bits and pieces left of course, and it's still as beautiful as anything - but it's only bits and pieces :/

From sales point of view, it was pretty good, but from my point of view, which matters nothing, it was the reason i ended my sub and left the game, the sustain changes and no rewards even for casual playing, while pumping the should be rewards in game into crown store/crates killed it for me.

They did a good job tbh with a lot of the implementations. And they deserve the sales.Sure they are having real trouble with dealing with server issues, hope they will be able to fix it in 2018.

That being said the name "Morrowind" is enough to get high sales.Come on it's MORROWIND.

He does not need too, pretty much anyone who was there in 2014 PvPing would agree that was arguably the best days.

Morrowind was meh for me, I'm still annoyed doing the last few quests there.

I feel that ESO has had enough of squeezing the nostalgia factor from older ES games, it should work hard on make it's own identity on the ES universe but then I read update 17 is about more Skyrim dungeons... *rolls eyes*

not in the mmo world..maybe in the eso world..mmo wise eso have a very low pop compared to the top dawgs.

Also, xpac hypes do that to any mmo...and then it dies off and people leave because problems that have been aorund since 2014 have yet to be fixed but "hey! theres a new class and new crown crates!"

Overall I think they had a good year, but not the best.

I'm sure the scam boxes, housing and eso+ extra storage increased their revenue. However, in an interview ESO made the comment "Despite 2017 being a troubled time for micro-transactions".

I kind of got the feeling that many players quit playing in 2017 or don't play as often. I feel some players quit spending money because they don't support scam boxes, and also PvP seems to have very low population now, except for 1 campaign.

    Agreed!

This year in ESO overall felt really good. The game has its problems and of course a lot of things need to be fixed, but overall it was a good year.

My hope is that 2018 will be even better. With a game like AoC being as hyped up as it is, im hoping this pushes ZoS to be on their A gamine in 2018 to make sure they dont lose customers to AoC (assuming AoC combat is fixed from the crap they showed already)

Sales? You said best year, not most profitable. Obviously the game doesn't have to function correctly to be profitable, we don't even have to enjoy ourselves in game to be profitable. ZOS is most profitable when they deny us features that came baked in with MMOs since launch then slowly dispense those features to us over years and behind a paywall.

Maybe I misunderstood the question but I was answering best for us, not best for ZOS. The two are very mutually exclusive.

I've only played around three months, so am in no way qualified to say whether or not this is ESO's best year, but I feel on certain things, ESO is not in a strong position, and that concerns me because I really like this game and am already invested. The 'certain things' I refer to are lack of QoL features, which honestly for a game that's been around for three, nearly four years is quite mind-boggling. Why is this? Why does the guild trader interface lack any real structure and QoL function? Why does my mail often take so long to come through, unless I relog, or port somewhere else? Why does the game seem less stable in regards to random crashes, or excessive loading screens? I could go on about some of the things that are lacking, that are and have been in other MMO's yet seem to elude ESO.

I really like this game. In some ways, I feel it is underrated, especially where the quests are concerned. I love the quests, the stories, the voice-acting....probably the best I've ever experienced in an MMO, but certain things do let this game down. For a triple A game, a lot of features feel left out or half-done. Was the launch so bad that it held certain things back?

On the good side, I was glad to read in the recent letter that there are some QoL updates coming.

This is a great game in many ways...and it's a shame the terrible beta scared me away initially, but I'm here now and I'm hoping a lot of the issues the game does have will be improved upon in due course.

ESO will have a bad year every time since launch until it fixes Cyrodill integrity and server stability so we can actually play without lag...
