Upgrading tradable dungeon drop makes it bound (bug?)

I and my mate went through dungeon countless times just to get the right weapon. Finally, it dropped! My mate had nothing in blacksmithing so I went to upgrade it for him (still almost 2 hours on trade timer). First I've tested with another item if upgrading it will make it bound. Success! No issue. Then I've tried to upgrade the very weapon we've farmed so long for. In the preview, the resulting weapon was shown as not bound. I've upgraded it, and suddenly it became bound and timer disappeared. I've learned it the hard way...just giving heads up for those who don't know. Looks to me like a bug.

same thing happened to me. (luckily i meant to keep mine) and i misinterpreted it so hard that i offered false info on the forums about it :(
that's weird about the preview, though

Q: the first item, the one you tested with, was that also a dungeon drop on a timer?

Nope, it was a regular item (I had no other dungeon items to trade it on). I assumed that if the normal item doesn't get bound, this one won't as well. After all, I still had 1,5h trade time left.

There should be some kind of info before you proceed saying "Improving this item will bind it to you blah blah".

nope, no warning. It only warns you about your success rate.

Wasn't this the case since Morrowind or even longer?....asking as I don't recall being able to upgrade a drop and then trade it for over a year.

I can't tell as I've left the game for few months. You can still upgrade any dropped item and trade it except the dungeon ones. It kinda sucks that there is no warning message.
