Inferno Maelstrom Staff vs Lightning Maelstrom on backbar for Mag Sorc?

So it seems that Nirnhoned is bis to have on the backbar, but which is better lightning or Inferno. Every build I see now is asking for lightning, yet not too long ago most builds and guilds recommended Inferno due to healers running lightning staffs. I remember some guilds not even letting you run with them if they saw you with a lightning staff on backbar or testing with it. So what has changed? I have an Inferno Maelstrom staff, and I really really really dont feel like going back into Maelstrom to farm for a lightning. How different will my dps be if I run the Inferno?

if your group has enough lightning wall already, you can run inferno. it should parse higher

Most people play heavy attack builds nowadays due to the sledge hammer that zos hit sustain with. Therefore off balance uptime tends to be lower if there aren't many lightning walls.

Basically this. In homestead where you'd have 7 magsorc dps with 1 mdk slave to buff fire damage, most magsorcs would run a fire wall.

ZOS then nerfed literally every tool in the game for sustain and also magsorc got nerfed and are now basically concussion off-balance slaves to our stamina dps overlords. Get with the times.

But on a serious note, feel free to back bar a fire staff. It's pretty much fine in everything except fully optimized vet trial raids.

Just an update. Finally got my Lightning staff today!. Only took 5 runs with the double drop. The irony is that its Sharpened. Will be switching it to Nirnhorned.

@Etrella Last I checked infused was better for CWC, now that VMA staff can be enchanted. I think Nirnhoned was best last patch (HotR).

Will research a bit before changing the trait then. I do see some builds using Infuse and some using Nirnhoned. Hard to decide now lol

I believe infused is better for single Target damage and nirnhoned is still better for the back bar for trash mobs since that's where your lightning wall is. I see a lot of people going infused front and nirnhoned back.

It depends on two factors. Do you have single target dots slotted on your back bar? Do you do heavy attacks or otherwise spend a lot of time on your back bar? If the answer to those twords questions is yes, then Nirn wins (single target dots retain their SD value from the bar they were cast with). If the answer is no, Infused wins. So if you were using a standard Sorc kit with LL and Blockade as the only things you're usually casting from the back bar, then you just get the SD buff for the couple seconds you are back there with Nirn. If you have Infused, you can either use a Weapon Damge glyph, whose buff will transfer to your front bar, or a Flame/Shock enchant. In the case of the WD glyph, you'd want to cast only 2 skills from the back bar to get to the front bar asap. In the case of Flame/Shock you'd want to cast 3 or 4 skills from the back bar to get two procs each rotation.

I switched from a nirn staff to a infused one and got an overall boost in dps by 2/3k...

Shock Staff is basically a must, since everyone is doing heavy attacks which takes the off balance effect off the target, which means that the more Shock Blockades you have the higher the off balance uptime.

It's amazing how sought after this was back in the day, and now nobody cares.

During the era of HotR, I was lucky enough to have a sharpened necropotence inferno staff drop. Best drop of my life, but sharpened has lost nearly all of its luster since the nerf.

I dont believe that to be a true statement. The more time you spend on your back bar, the more appealing Nirn becomes. Nirn is also superior for some builds if you do your heavy attack AOE from your back bar. Now most meta non Heavy Attack builds these days do favor an infused staff, but Nirn should not be totally dismissed. Personally, my NB runs infused and my sorc pet build runs nirn. I have one more staff to change, and will probably make a second infused.
