How exactly does spell damage work with DoTs?

Does the spell damage you get from, say the Julianos set, actually apply on every tick of a DoT? Meaning I would get an extra ~300 damage on each tick?

I'm trying to collect both the Silks of the Sun and the Burning Spellweave sets for my magicka DK and I'm wondering if it would lead to my DoTs all actually gaining that much damage on each tick or if it works some other way, like adding that base damage to the total damage done by the full DoT.

    from my understanding, the DoT damage scales off of the tool tip damage. So whatever boosts the tool tip damage will also increase the overall damage of the DoT. I don't think you will see an extra 300 per tick, but rather a 300 boost of the DoTs overall damage.

    I could be very wrong though, I've not looked too much into it

    Note that all (almost all?) references to "Spell Damage" on items and sets refers to the character stat and not the actual spell damage done by spells or seen on skill tooltips. What is boils down to is that all damage numbers on tooltips have a formula like (magicka spells only for clarity but same with stamina spells and weapon damage/stamina):
    Damage = A * Magicka+ B * SpellDamage

    Where A and B are some constants that vary from spell to spell. For example, the Fiery Breath DOT has the constants:
    Fiery Breath DOT Damage = 0.09104 * Magicka +  0.95023  * SpellDamage + 6.98706

    So if you increase your "Spell Damage" stat by 300 you would gain 285 (300*0.95) of actual damage before any other modifiers (like + Flame Damage).

    I've been a long time proponent of renaming the character stat "Spell Power" to prevent this exact sort of confusion with "spell damage" refering to damage from spells which happens quite regularly.

    285 on each tick or to the grand total of the DoT?

    For this spell it is 285 to the grand total according to the tooltip:
    Exhale a flaming blast to enemies in front of you, dealing X Flame Damage and an additional Y Flame Damage over 8 seconds.

    Note that some DoTs use a dmg/tick in their tooltip and would have different skill coefficients.

    That seems like it's not very much in the end.

    It's not a lot per tick of one skill. Remember that the stats help every skill you cast, and you can overlap dots on a target. Once you get the enemy burning intensely under multiple effects, you'll see good results. Spellweave, Silks of the Sun, and Julianos will all help with that. I'm not going to recommend a set as I haven't reviewed the MDK details this update, but you're on the right track.
