Normalize Dyes Please

This latest costume is a great example of everything wrong with the dye system. There are so many costumes, hats, and individual gear pieces we can choose from, but then we get artificially limited because dyes will look wildly different from piece to piece. I have had a lot of ideas over the years to mix various styles into something interesting but have been stonewalled by terrible dye application between the styles.

This new costume looks terrible compared to how it was advertised and most of the dyes look like garbage on it. The event and crown crate hats in particular are really bad offenders, as I can almost never match them with something. Some monster sets, too. Enough is enough. Please have some consistency here.

    Dyes have a low tone, mid tone, and high tone. Rarer dyes may have entirely different hues for these values, common ones will all be shades of one color.

    Dye slots may take their color from the low value (common on cloth) , mid value (common on leather), or high value (common on metal). They may also have a base albedo value, for example a top that can't be dyed a dark shade is modifying the color it recieves to be whiter. If you experiment and learn the range of colors each dye can represent, you'll be able to reliably color any costume or item the base shade you'd like it to be. From there it's just tweaking.

    Of course, getting it to match your character's skintone without being garish is a different matter entirely.

    Well, you accurately described the problem, but that particular part simply isn't true. It would be true if we had an unlimited amount of possible dyes, but we don't. I can't even get certain light armor pieces to match other light armor pieces and so on.

    Totally agree with the OP. The color we see on the palette is often way different from what it looks like on certain gear/costumes.

    Particularly egregious with the Holiday in Balmoral costume.

    You can get real close. But, the trick is to use Dyes that you initially think won't match. For example, the Vile Green one you get from Alchemy comes out as a really nice Gold color on certain armors. So, if you play around for a while and choose different colors, you can get real close. Not an exact match, but real close. Also, different motifs take the dyes differently, so that can help, or exacerbate the issue.

    Right now the system gives good diversity simply because the colors don't always look the same on different things, not sure if making so the color always look the same no matter what they are applied to would be better overall.

    But, it is process to get this done, and it also does not help that Ruby Mats take dyes weird, so that makes color matching even harder. The lower tier mats take colors truer to what you think they should be, although they can vary even on those mats.

    What I have done recently is I have given up trying to get a certain color, instead I use Randomize a couple of times, then tweak from there. I have chosen dyes I never thought I would use.

    This problem goes away when you buy crown store dyes. :/

    At this point I am convinced this is intentional on their part, just like the inventory issues you run into without ESO+
