People's definitions of crazy is like pulled from Hollywood (like anything).
Cadwell isn't insane, and for the exact reasons you stated with being logical he does pose some decisions that prove consciousness like supporting us in the main storyline and not to just his benefit, but ours.

Some emotional detachment might be there given by some of his ideas and dialogue, so maybe some pathological differences go on in his head, but he is by far from insane.

Why he has a pot over his head is another question, but if it meant hiding a bad hairdoo or a close enough thing to a helmet in a deranged realm, why would I care?

I think is that he is all cheerful when is is basically in the worst possible place in Oblivion.
Now clearly this has protected him from completely losing himself like the other soul shivren.
So whether it started off as a stratgey to protect himself from the horrors of coldharbour and it resulted in him just breaking... in a different way.. to other soul shriven or wheter he was always overwhelmingly cheerful/crazy.

My opinion is that he was a knight in the service of Meridia, Molag Baal kidnapped him and tried to force him to kneel and switch allegence, (like he does in skyrim). He never gave in. So Baal took his soul just threw him into Coldharbour

Disassociated with reality is pretty much crazy at least at his level.
On the other hand he is functional.
Now he might make up his craziness but its feel to integrated for it.

I really would like a quest after Cadwell's Gold to charge into Molag Bal'shouse and retrieve Cadwell's soul, followed by convincing Meridia to restore his vitality. If anyone deserves their soul and life back, it's Cadwell. He's earned it.
I've been muted since November 2017 because of the whiny crybabies on this forum and the liberal ZOS employees coddling them.

Disassociating is actually a way of coping in stressful situations to keep yourself sane. All the other soulshriven are broken husks, while Cadwell is still chipper and lively. He's certainly eccentric, though.

"My character is the comic relief in the game. Sir Cadwell, he is kind of a Don Quixote character.
He loves battle, he loves to go on quests and to try and help helpless maidens and all that kind of thing, and he loves fighting but he never seems to be the slightest bit scared about it, he regards it as a great game, and if he is wounded then he is incredibly brave about it in a British sort of way.
I like it when my character, Sir Cadwell gets rather vague or confused, I like that kind of vagueness, I like playing that.....

    Cadwell is incredibly well-adjusted,
but he is well-adjusted to Coldharbour, due to being there so long.
This makes him maladjusted to Tamriel by the metric of other characters.
