Costumes

I've been thinking... Characters have a slot for costumes/disguises. They're used in some quests, and are often left empty. What if we were allowed to make use of them for actual gear?

I'll explain with an example.

My character uses the Ordinator armour costumes from the Crown Store. However, I don't care for the helmet. My preference would be an ordinary hood, probably the Breton low level one, as it's relatively plain, and colours properly. What if I could put that piece of equipment in that slot and it would VISUALLY replace the headgear my character would otherwise be wearing?

Or, suppose I like to wear heavy armour, but want to wear a particular robe? By putting the robe in that slot, I would gain the APPEARANCE of the robe, but could retain my heavy armour.

Of course, you would not gain any stat or ability bonuses for it, it would be strictly a cosmetic thing.

What do you think? Is this feasible? Desirable?

I heard we are getting transmog system, I hope we will have cosmetic slots to craft gear and place it in said slots. That would be my hope for it anyways.

I like the idea, but I can see how it would conflict with ZOS' interests. Why would a player buy a crown store hat if they could just craft a level 1 breton hood to hide that ugly monster set?

For what it's worth, there are a few hoods split between the Crown Store, and various event boxes. To be fair, a bunch of those might have been in crates. I don't know if any of those give you the look you're after, though.

Also, if you really want the Ordinator look, it's just medium or heavy Dark Elf armor, with a few exceptions. (The Hand of Almalexia legs are Daedric light, I think.)

So, this is a visual you can dummy up with actual gear, if you're so inclined.

Masks, hoods and hats from the crown store all replace the default headgear of the ordinator (and other) costume armors. Alternatively you can Hide Helmet. I never wear the default headgear that comes with ANY of the costume armors....

To be fair, I originally suggested some ordinary hoods for the Crown Store, but all we get are ultrafancy hoods with built in masks or other such nonsense. Plus, my suggestion would be useful for OTHER costume parts. Say I want my character wearing sandals, but I've got heavy armour equipped? I could put some sandals in that costume slot.

I just think it's got more versatility.

I often DO hide the helmet. However, there are times I would want a hood, such as if it's raining.

We are getting a "transmog" system, but we don't know anything about how it works so it's anyone's guess if it will be good or awful. My bet and my hope is that it will be good, because we already have a great system with the Collections UI and it seems obvious that they'll implement it through that somehow. But my fear is that it will somehow end up terrible, like by using "cosmetic slots" that you have to place crafted gear into, or like you have to go to a crafting station and transform a specific piece of gear into something else. I'm also worried that it will have a consumable cost instead of a one-time up-front cost, and then free and unlimited after that like everything else in the cosmetic system.

I'm familiar with other mmos (LotRO) that have a wardrobe system to allow you to equip items cosmetically. I liked this system.

I'm not sure what this "transmog" system is exactly, but I'm gathering it's designed to let you choose the appearance of actual equipment... but only within it's particular style.

So, if I wanted to see a robe, I'd still have to actually equip the robe, losing the armour rating and so forth. My idea allows us to equip one item cosmetically, while allowing us to actually equip the armour we need for stats.

I can't speak to feasible, but desirable? HECK YES!!!

I would love to use some of the "lowbie" items, they look so much better and uncluttered, especially Argonian medium (the whole thing) and the Argonian light robe, and the Breton Heavy chest.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I totally agree - so mannt of the styles look better in the low end gear. For example, I love low level Nord heavy armor, because it's chain and it's just much more flattering on a female char than the high level plate. I would love to be able to assign that low end chest piece as a "costume" but keep the armor rating of the higher level armor.
