PC NA - Trapped in the Bluff quest bugged

It is impossible to complete the quest as Taren doesn't follow you after a certain point.
I tried everything, but as soon as I reach that point (which is in the middle of nothing in the desert), even if Taren is glued to my ass, he despawns and I got the message saying I failed the quest.

✭Seems like this is still a thing after two years. I'm on PS4 EU and I just encountered the exact same problem. Tried it 5 times on different routes now, but after a certain point Taren just says "This doesn't seem like the right way to me" (even though it clearly is the right way and there are no monsters or whatever around), he despawns and is sitting in his original spot again, waiting to be picked up. Quest cannot be completed.This poor little Bosmer stealth passive had passionate friends and a big loving family!0
