I did the same thing and have been playing now for 2 months!

I agree with @Tandor ... roll a new character. While I had a level 40 NB whose skills were all reset, there have been so many changes to the game, it's best to just soak them all in from level 1.

One of the biggest things I found in terms of mindset change is skill points are readily abundant once you get high levels, so getting all crafts later in the game is viable, which at retail it was not. Beyond that, have fun and enjoy!
Major change is level scaling, you can go everywhere at any level. This is very visible you see players of all level everywhere.

Benefit of keeping the level 40 is that you have probably gotten to coldharbor, you need 10 more levels and you are into CP land.
I would do that, do the main quest and the other zones, You need to respec obviously.
You can eiter play NB as an stamina or an magic build, yes this is also new, you probably have an stamina setup so stick with that, put all point into stamina and focus on bow and dual wield for damage.

Get into some nice guilds for advice and help, you probably want some new gear crafted too,
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Take your time. Explore every corner and crack. Experiment with your character, don't strive for what is best but for what you think is fun and cool. Build a personality/theme around your character and follow it to immerse yourself. Basically treat the game like a single player experience but where you have the possibility to meet other people.

The only exception to the above is if you intend to run dungeons or other group activities; in which case you should as a bare minimum know what your role is - if you queue as healer make sure you can actually heal and if you queue as tank make sure you have a taunt (if you don't know what these two entice that is when you should refer to online guides).

Most importantly; have fun - which means play the game in your way (but out of respect for other people's time optimize yourself as much as possible for group content)!

Hello! I LOVED this game at release, I've always been a fan of the single player games. I played for a few months, then as often happens, life got busy etc. I'd like to try the game again but SO much has changed it's overwhelming to know where to start. Any tips? I enjoy roleplaying and casual exploration.

    Thanks

Forget everything you knew. This is not the same game you played.
This. The game is completely different.

    • Don't be surprised to see players from other factions in what was once faction-only areas. All zones are open to all factions, so everyone (regardless of faction) is all mixed together. This was one of the biggest changes I noticed when I came back.

    • You can go to any zone now and kill things/explore and everything will be on your level in terms of difficulty because you're scaled to the content. There are no more vet zones or level-appropriate zones. Go anywhere you want.

    Welcome back and have fun!

Press Alt+F4 as soon as you log-in!

Just kidding. The game is amazing and has sooooo much more content than what it had upon release. You are also 'unlimited' meaning you can explore wherever you want and in whatever order you want.

After 2000 hours of gameplay I still only scratched the surface

Don't. Performance is awful and customer service doesn't exist. Save yourself while you still can.
