I've had one in my characters' inventories for ages. Click it, it's on. Click it again, it's off. Doesn't get used up. If you have one that is "expended upon use" and goes away, that sounds like a bug.

No, you're correct. I ran into a creature and it vanished on hit...because it's obviously an appearance item.
