Heavy armor magicka buils, are they viable?

Just putting this out there because I genuinely want to start playing some magicka builds since I ahve played only stam classes since forever, are they viable? If so, I am assuming I should just use a staff instead of a 2 h or 1 h s? Playing a LA DK or any Temp seems counter productive because generally they are pretty close quarters.

I wore heavy for years on both Templar and DK. This patch they are both wearing light. The cost reduction is too much to pass.

I might be on later to discuss sets @laced. You can make light armour builds just as tanky as some heavy builds. Requires a bit more finger action though.

Considering my main, i dont think there can be any more finger action than that =D

They're pretty viable in PvP, in PvE you'd be kind of gimping yourself for no reason though. I mean it'd work for open world and stuff, but there really isn't much reason to - light armor offers far more survivability due to being able to basically spam Harness(light armor active skill - the damage shield), plus being able to spam skills in general - don't forget that certain templar and DK skills heal you.

If it's purely for open world and more of an rp/cool looks thing you could definitely roll with that though.

And yes, magicka users generally roll with staves, though there are some builds with DW due to the spelldamage buff+passive it provides, and for PvP/PvE tanking s&b is always a great option.

So the consensus i am getting here is I should go 5 light and 2 heavy then. Got it.

VMA in heavy armor is pretty bad comparing 5 piece light and medium passives bonus

Heavy can be used in either PvP or PvE but truly shine in PvP.

PvP: MagDK, Magplar, mag warden, not so much sorc or NB though...
PvE: same minus tank builds and MSA, I have at least 40 completions on a hvy Magplar stage 4 vamp(yea I keep forgetting to feed...)

The main issue you will face is sustain and penetration but survivability increases dramatically... pick your poison

I'm with @WillhelmBlack long time heavy user on magika builds but since morrowind I dropped heavy on all magika builds that I run.

Heavy is still viable, but as soon as you need damage to kill people and start to look for ways to add that into your build I truly believe that light armor is just too efficient for ME to go heavy anymore.

You need a certain amount of survivability, damage, and sustain. The most efficient way imo to build that is to use light armor since it gives you a lot of sustain and damage natively, which opens you up to run a utility set to increase your survivability

I run 5 heavy, 2 light on my PVP MagDK, with a mix of infused and impen on the armor. Decent magicka pool and great survivability.
