Just something from a couple months ago that seems to be relevant still today. A must see ZOS and others.

I get plagued with loading screens when I group up or run addons . With no addons and no group it is less likely to happen . I do not know why this is . I also have to set my graphics lower in PVP to avoid the long preload on my end . I run the texture quality at low and the sub texture high with shadows low and most after effects off . I can run the game max graphics and get good FPS but the load times are twice as slow . In PVP I'm always in a hurry to get where the fire is so can not afford to wait for pretty graphics .

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do and the server is just coughing up hairballs and we are stuck . Some of those things I mentioned will help so don't run any addons you don't absolutely need in PVP .

There was a IT guy for another game that told me grouping with other people that have poor connection can cause other people in group the same issue on the server end . I did an experiment with my old group of friends that all have newer computers and all of us adjusted graphics so we had 90-120 FPS with no one running any add ons . None of us got stuck in a loading for an hour . Granted that's just one hour of testing it but it was a big difference then before when one of us would almost always get stuck in loading screens . Unfortunately we couldn't test this during a full campaign time with everyone pop locked and fighting . They just don't log in often enough to wait for that time to happen .

I'm almost certain this problem in exasperated in group play and has something to do with how group information is handled on ZoS servers . I can't be positive though because I never get enough tests in different situations .

I'd completely agree that grouping causes more lag. I rarely group for this reason and when I do it's usually no more than 8-10 max.

The real cause of lag is playing ESO.

But that is not 100% true . In PVE I can not remember a time I got stuck in a loading screen . Maybe in Rawl'Kha a couple years ago I think but that how infrequent it is in PVE compared to Cyrodiil for me . I think that is also why some people they don't lag and don't know what others are complaining about . They probably just over land PVE . Sometimes I lag in PVE but almost never get stuck in loading screens . I would really like ZoS to identify that the issue is not Deer and Lightning Bugs or friendly animations . Its something else I believe in their code .

There are some major flaws in their game engine. It's been like this a while. Ever since the original development team was pulled off to go work on the console version of the engine, it's never quite been right. After console release they did the usual dev contraction of a game in live mode, instead of shipping those programmers/devs back to work on Live PC and fix what had gotten mucked up.

They have consistently had an underperforming game engine since about 1.2 or 1.3. Right at launch you could run this game in High/Ultra in the middle of a Wabbajack zerg and it performed relatively well. Since then it's just been terrible.

They broke something intrinsic and do not have the skill, knowledge, or whatever it is to fix it.

Some of my groups have drawn a high correlation between the "ground-sharking/invisible group member bug" and long loading screens. It goes something like this: if anyone in the group is in the ground for anyone else, then load screens will plague your group.

In the ground bug is extremely common for groups like BoD/VE/DK/DD/Kush etc, because the nature of the groups has many people comming and going each hour.

Avoiding the load screens requires some proactive countermeasures. Periodically, have your entire group stand in a circle and look for invisible members (keep front porch is a good spot). If someone is invisible, have them run out to a nearby resource flag and then come back. This should render them visible.

If everyone is visible to everyone else, then loadscreens are far more rare.

If you are a joining member of a group you can also take proactive actions. When you first join and run to your group, once you are in render range of your group, go ahead and run away again (distance from inner keep to resource) because there is like a 90% chance you are invisible to someone in your group because ZOS fix your game.

Alternatively, you should be able to run to your group before joining them, and then request an invite. This should help with the bug as well, but is probably less reliable than the strat above.
