problem logging in on a computer with a store bought game on it

hey all, i have a friend staying over and he has a steam bought game account and i have a disc loaded game client , but he cant login to the game on my computer, keeps saying "Login Error userid or password is incorrect etc..." but it is the right details. anyone know what we are doing wrong ? he can login to his account on the ESO website successfully. any help would be greatly appreciated.
