What about spell penetration? Does it go through the shield?

Can someone provide a list of what the shileds protects you from and which effects go through it

Appreciated)

I assume you are refering to damage shields. Damage shields are non crittable, crit chance is useless against them. Oblivion damage ignores the damage shields and hits your health directly, same goes for bleed damage i believe. Damage shields have no resistences so penetration doesnt affect the damage you do to them, however they are still affected by damage reduction effects like major and minor protection.

Damage shields cannot be crit and they have 0 resistances so penetration doesn't do anything against them either. Shields are affected by cp(such as reduce physical dmg done, etc) and are NOT affected by block - if the shielded person gets hit for say 10k while blocking, his shield will eat full 10k.

The damage overflow - like if you hit them for 10k but their shield is only 7k - will work against their real armor which means it can crit, penetrate their armor's spell/physical resistance and be reduced by blocking.

Like the person above said, there're several types of attacks/damage that go all the way through shields(add Shield Breaker set to the list, too).

One last addition, you can still get the crit 'proc' for terms of set/skill/passive bonuses .e.g "when you deal critical damage, you have X% chance..." or "Critical hits heal you for..."

The critical event happens, so to speak, but the damage itself is unmodified.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

IRL'ing for a while for assorted reasons, in forum, and in game.
I am neither warm, nor fuzzy...

Umm... are you sure about that? The sorc's crit surge ability.... you sure?

Yep - its true. (At least that's what I'm told.. never really tested it)

Also worth mentioning that shields don't stop any crowd-control or status effects. So where a block may stop you from getting knocked down, a shield won't.

Also shields cannot crit themselves (like heals do) - so a 7k shield will always be a 7k shield regardless of the shield-user's crit chance. Their strength is not reduced by anything like major defile, but nor is there anything like major mending to buff them.

And a subtle, but important difference when comparing to block/dodge - shields have to be cast, and although that cast can't be interrupted, the effect doesn't appear until close to the end of the animation. It also doesn't cancel other abilities like block/dodge does. So when you're in the middle of using another ability and suddenly need defence and have a split-second to get it, shield can sometimes be way too slow when compared to block/dodge.

Bleed-damage won´t ignore shields. It ignores resistance :)
