Anyone play on pC with ps4 controller?

Hello all :p I play ESO on ps4 mainly but thinking to move on to pc version (half my FFXIV guild also play ESO and wanna play with them). The thing is that I am a console player and I can only play (and enjoy gaming) with a controller.

A several months ago I remember I tried to play ESO with my ps4 controller and there was a "Beta" support for gamepad users. I dont remember the details, but something didnt work well and I had to drop it and go back to ps4.

I wanna ask (Before I re-download 40+ GB :p)

1. is the gamepad support still in Beta?
2. were there any improvements on this?
3. If I buy the game on Steam will the ps4 controller work better with the steam support than use the game without steam and use DS4Windows?
4. Lastly, to those that play with ps4 controller, any tips/advice to make it work as better as I can?

Thanks in advance!

I do not have answer(s) concerning this, but I would like to also include an addition question...

If anyone decides to one day switch from console to PC ESO will they be able to transfer account/link account so that one does not have to start entirely from scratch or is picking up on PC from console a completely fresh start experience?

its a complete fresh experience... which personally I dont really mind since what I love most in the game is leveling new characters, try different builds. But I will definitely miss all the trait research I have done and be able to craft sets on my characters :P

Of course there is also champion points... For my playstyle they were overkill, since I rarely do any hard group content if not at all. The only thing I cannot leave behind is my ps4 controller! :P

You need an app called XInputMapper to convert your PS4 into a virtual XBox controller (that's what the game recognizes). This then behaves exactly like a PS4 (with XB labels in the GUI)

For the button labels in game there is a pc addon that changes it to ps4 buttons

Stormproof: Vibeke - 50 EP mDragonknight | Savi Dreloth - 50 EP Magsorc | Sadi Dreloth - 50 EP Magblade | Sigtric Stormaxe - 50 EP Stamsorc | Valora Dreloth - 50 EP Magplar | Sigtric the Unbearable 50 EP Stam Warden

\o/ My people! I got my PS4 controller for computer gaming and I love it, and I've never owned a PS4.

Steam has inbuilt PS4 controller support now, but I prefer using Input Mapper - I have a screenshot and a discord profile, and I can swap between them instead of re-binding my home button every time. You can use DS4Windows if you prefer.

Like Sigtric said, there's an add-on to put PS4 icons in the game, and it's wonderful - and it even works on the load screen messages. Super-lightweight, I've never had a problem with it.

As for other tips... If you're near a keyboard & mouse, you can bind a key to switch between gamepad and k&m mode: I like playing most of the game in gamepad, but inventory and guild store pages are much easier to use in k&m and chat is all text-based. Most inventory and store addons don't work in gamepad mode, alas, but the combat addons work fine. I like using my PS4/home button as a screenshot or push to talk button, but you can bind it to bring up your combat metrics log, toggle ui on & off, whatever you want.

Gaempad works really well on PC, but not with the PS4 controller without a thrid party application that may or may not work well or be easy to use.
The only controller truly supported and working with computers without any extra software now is the Xbox One Controller, the bluetooth versions or the older ones with the wireless dongle.

I had my old Xbox 360 gamepad and a Logitech F310 stop working properly with this game and other games when Microsoft stopped XP support and encouraged Windows 10 upgrades. I upgraded and it still didn't work properly.
Thankfully, the Xbox One controller is a step up that works very well and is comfortable as a controller has ever been for me.

On my MAC the beta control works fine, don't need to use any mapping software. I absolutely love playing with the controller but ended up movin back to mouse after noticing a small delay between pressing a button and it registering in game. I'm guessing its a MAC / PS4 issue.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Gamepad support is no longer in Beta, but only includes PC/Xbox controllers.
    2. There haven't really been any improvements other than odd bug fixes.
    3. I don't believe Steam supports the PS4 controller. Either way, you wouldn't be able to use the PS4 controller with ESO without downloading a third party program. I'm not sure which ones are out there for the PS4 though. I use BetterDS3 for my PS3 controller. They may have a PS4 option. But you would have to do the button mapping yourself.
    4. You really have to figure out what works best with your play style. Either way, you will most likely end up still using a mouse and keyboard from time to time.

Steam added PS4 controller support in December, and I can confirm it works out of the box - no special applications required.

I prefer InputMapper, like I said above, but the Steam config works fine.

The 360 still works on Windows and I had multiple people in guild chat recommend the F310 to me as something they were using themselves, as of May. The 360 needs a receiver in order to be used wirelessly, yes, but that's been the case for as long as I can remember.

You can also use the DS4 wirelessly in Steam; bluetooth hates me, though, and I play literally inches from my tower, so I keep it wired.

My computer just stopped thinking of either controller I had as the one I was using, player one, and tried to make me use the other one. This would happen while playing. It didn't matter if I unplugged the link for the other controller or not. Sometimes I could get the Logitech F310 to work by flipping a switch it had for "x-input" or something, but that was not a permanent fix.
I finally had enough of the hassle and bought an xbox one controller and have been happy and playing easily since.

    1. is the gamepad support still in Beta?
I think the answer is 'No'. Since Zenimax removed the 'beta' in the setting menu. But still needs some improvements to use. So later on you may try add-ons or make requests for more features. Good games always have good supporters.

    2. were there any improvements on this?
I'm not playing this game for a long time, only about 2 months. But from my point, it's quite good for an MMO game to use gamepad. Its design is to support gamepad in a very basic principle. You can see there are 'primary' 'sencondary'-ish operations in keyboard keybindings too, I think it's just for optimizing input in a very limit range. Not as overwhelm as other games.

    3. If I buy the game on Steam will the ps4 controller work better with the steam support than use the game without steam and use DS4Windows?
I don't have a ps4 controller, but I know that ps4 controller doesn't support XInput driver. At least you can use some software to handle it.
I personally use Nintendo Switch Pro controller. Steam supports it now(And also ps4 controller I guess), and with a little configuration in Windows, it works like a charm. I also have a XBOX 360 controller, not use it anymore. lol

    4. Lastly, to those that play with ps4 controller, any tips/advice to make it work as better as I can?
I can only speak from a general basis, gamepad is great but something you have to keep in mind:
    • Chatting in text is nearly zero supported, the only thing you can do is focusing an input box, then switch to keyboard. Also other situation you want to input some text.
    • Most Add-ons must be setting with k/m in the system setting menu, it's not supported with gamepad. But a lot of them can be used with gamepad, because you can bind keys to use them.
    • There's no way to quit game with gamepad, only logout is supported, and select your character is only k/m supported. Not too much if you don't often switch characters.
    • Maybe no way to kite mobs/players in combat, there's no way to turn back immediately to use skills, aiming is not as free as mouse. But I don't care this one, PVE experience is very good.
    • Don't worry about the buttons, you can LB/RB + A/B/X/Y/LS/RS to do a lot of things(mapping in XBOX360 for example), you can swap gears/builds, bind a lot of quickslot items to switch, bind some quite good emotions/actions to use.

As a conclusion, you will sometimes need k/m, but not often if you don't chat in text. You can enjoy the most part of the game in gamepad just like ps4.

I use DS4Windows to play with a PS4 controller on PC, I have my own custom keybindings as well which I feel improves on the default setup, at least for me. You're probably used to the way its setup so this may not help you as much, but here's how I have it setup:

I don't currently play with ps4 controller but I do play with xbox 1 controller. I seem to remember playing around when gamepad support came out for pc and was able to use ps4 controller with a special driver. But since windows had a better support for xbox one I purchased one and had no complaints since.

I believe the beta status is because they have not fully integrated it into the PC character select screen, and because game-pad mode interferes with alot of inventory mods.

And personally I have spent hours trying to get Xpadder and others to work with this game before gamepad support and I always felt it was clumsy, clunky, and better off just using standard keyboard/mouse when I did get it to work reliably. But once the native support came out I had no problem with playing with gamepad.
As a casual player I was satisfied that at one point I had a char max level and near max crafting with almost all motifs and I pretty much lost interest. Then ESO discovered DLC's and now my main is just a wanabe and I am happily pulled back into the game.
