New Character Starting Location (post-Morrowind)

My understanding was that with Morrowind, new characters would have the option of going through the original starting/tutorial area or going through the Morrowind tutorial area. This does not appear to be the case as each new characters I've created since Morrowind has started in Morrowind. Was this changed from the original plan, or did I just read something incorrectly?

take this with a grain of salt, but what *I've heard* is that the new morrowind tutorial is a mandatory experience for each new character, but the original (coldharbour) tutorial is available as a questline that you have to hunt down from someone somewhere...sorry, I don't know where or who

and, of course, I could be wrong about ALL of the above - best info I have at the moment based on forum conversations I've heard...er...read, that is

You get a quest after you leave the starting/tutorial area that starts the main story (the original Coldharbour tutorial). You don't get an option to start there if you have the Morrowind expansion installed.

So the 'mysterious hooded figure' that auto-kills your character if you start it's quest used to be mandatory?

I did that on one character, and I didn't like that it starts with your character getting murdered... so I've been avoiding that hooded figure on all my others...

@kichwas The hooded figure is the start to the main quest in the game. The Main Quest. Even the faction quest ties in. It's important that you speak with the hooded figure.

@DerethDawnblade That was the story we were told very early on before the PTS came out. AFAIK It has never been the case in any released version. You have the option to skip the Morrowind tutorial, you don't have the option to choose which tutorial. Disappointing I know.

To be fair they did make it sound like you'd have the option of doing one or the other or neither before the Morrowind chapter went on the pts. I was a bit confused when there wasn't the option but found you now had to do the Wailing Prison in order to start the main quest.

It was never something we were told by ZOS. Someone suggested it as a possibility and it proliferated into something we expected to happen despite there being no confirmation.

Morrowind is a pretty terrible starting location btw devs...lots of running around and few wayshrines, and subterfuge missions that can easily give a new player bounties. Not very well thought out.

While you now start in Morrowind, nothing prevents you from immediately porting to the mainland and starting there with the main quest etc..
